Making even just one of them could get in the way of you losing fat, and instead cause you to gain weight! I’ve been working in the weight-loss world for four decades, and I’ve heard a lot of advice over the years. But some of the strategies you think are healthy are actually getting in the way of reaching your weight-loss goals. You may be tracking your data and avoiding certain foods—but are you tracking the right type of data? And are you making sure you’re getting enough of the one macronutrient that will have the biggest impact on your weight and body composition? Tune in and find out the top five mistakes I see people making over and over again, and maybe you’ll finally find your stumbling block if you’ve been doing all of the “right” things to lose weight, but are still struggling to reach your goals. How Our Understanding of Health Has Been Hijacked with Colleen & Jason Wachob
47:36
If you’ve spent any time at all in the wellness world over the past decade, you’re familiar with mindbodygreen, the premier health and wellness website for articles, courses, certifications, and more. In this episode, I’m so excited to host the founders, Jason and Colleen Wachob—it’s also the first time I’ve had a couple on the podcast at the same time! Colleen and Jason have just released their new book, The Joy Of Well-Being: A Practical Guide to a Happy, Healthy, and Long Life, which challenges our definition of self-improvement by revealing what a healthy lifestyle looks like at the fundamental level—and how it’s not what you think. In our current health-influencer culture, we are bombarded with information about what we should be doing. But this information often focuses on the latest trends and assumes you have endless time and money to tackle every new health fad that comes your way. To top it off, the information you get is often conflicting. Colleen and Jason’s goal is to help you cut through the noise and find a recipe for well-being that brings joy and happiness to your life and focuses on emotional health as much as physical health. You’ll be so encouraged by this conversation and come away with a few practical tips on how you can bring more well-being into your life today, without sacrificing all of your precious time and resources. I Tracked My Macros for 30 Days, Here's What Happened...
15:44
Do you know how much protein you eat in a day? How about fat and carbohydrates? Most of us are pretty unaware of how much of each of these macros we are getting in our diets, which is where macro tracking—not calorie tracking!—can be a helpful tool. I always say that WHAT you eat is more important than how much you eat, but making sure you are hitting your protein-intake goals and getting in the right amount of carbs and fats is another important factor in reaching your ideal body composition and feeling your best. I used a macro-tracking app to log my protein, carbs, and fats (along with the diversity of plant fiber I consumed) for a month, and it helped me dial in the ratio that makes me feel and perform at my best. In this episode, I’m sharing my results and giving you the info you need to make sure you are getting the right amount of each macronutrient in your diet to look and feel your best, too. I’ll also share some tips on how to uplevel your diet even further with a few of my simple and effective hacks, so stay tuned until the end! How to Stop Being So Effing Hungry with Amy Shah
36:07
When I heard the title of my guest’s new book, Why Am I So Effing Hungry?, I knew I had to have her on the podcast ASAP! Amy Shah, MD, is a double board-certified medical doctor and nutrition expert with training from Cornell, Columbia, and Harvard Universities. Drawing from her background in internal medicine and allergy/immunology, as well as her own wellness journey, she has dedicated her practice to helping her patients feel better and live healthier through her integrative and holistic approach to wellness. She was named one of mindbodygreen’s Top 100 Women in Wellness to Watch in 2015 and appears regularly on national television shows, magazines, and podcasts. New predictions state that we will see a 35% rise in diabetes rates by 2060, along with a doubling of the number of people with heart disease. These numbers are frightening and beg the question, why, as a society, are we so addicted to food? In this episode, Dr. Shah and I dive deep into why we are so hungry all the time, how the food industry fuels our food addictions, the role of dopamine in food cravings, and whether or not it’s even possible to eat intuitively in a processed food world. But it’s not all doom and gloom! I like to say that little hinges swing big doors, and Dr. Shah offers practical, easy-to-implement steps you can take to reset your hunger signals and restore your metabolic health. Stay tuned until the end, because we’ll tell you how to get your hands on the “secret chapter” of Dr. Shah’s new book—it’s full of tips and tricks you won’t want to miss! Coming Off Ozempic for Weight Loss - STOP Weight Regain By Doing THIS
22:51
Have you considered taking one of the popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, but you’re worried about weight regain once you stop taking the drug? Listen up! I’ve got some tips that will help you avoid some of the dreaded side effects and get the best results from using these medications. While I always recommend a diet and lifestyle approach to weight loss, the bottom line is this: if you are weight-loss resistant, these solutions could give you the edge you need to finally move the needle. However, the last thing you want to do is lose precious metabolism-supporting muscle. One of the downsides to using a drug like Ozempic is that it may prompt equal amounts of muscle and fat loss. Even though you see the number on the scale drop, your fat-to-muscle ratio may actually move in the wrong direction. Without adequate muscle on your body, you will have a lowered metabolism and a harder time keeping your body from storing fat once you stop taking the drug. In this episode, I’m going to give you the exact strategies you need to put in place—whether or not you are using Ozempic—to increase your muscle mass, hold on to your skeletal muscle, and rev up your metabolism so that you can achieve lasting weight loss results and an ideal body composition for the long term. Full show notes: jjvirgin.com/lastingresults A body composition scale will help you track your muscle to fat ratio while you are losing weight: https://amzn.to/3mTpTWW I recommend the Carbon app to make sure your protein intake is optimal. 7 Most Common Food Intolerances You Never Knew You Had
17:52
What if the healthy foods you are eating are actually hurting you—and you don’t even realize it? Maybe you’re struggling with fatigue, joint aches, bloating, headaches, digestive issues, cravings, autoimmune issues, skin breakouts, or you just can’t seem to lose the weight. It could be because of hidden food intolerances in your diet. In this episode, I’m going to share with you the top food intolerances I see time and time again, how I figured them out, and how you can determine if they’re problem foods for you, too. You’ve probably heard the term “leaky gut,” which is where food particles can pass through a damaged gut lining into your body where the immune system sees them as intruders. It then sounds the alarm and sets off a host of unwanted symptoms. This phenomenon occurs all too often and many people are completely unaware that the foods they are eating, even those that seem healthy, are actually the cause of the symptoms they are experiencing. You don’t want to miss this one, because I’m going to share with you why certain foods are more problematic than others, and give you tips on how you can make simple swaps that will help you reach your health and weight goals. The #1 Secret to Losing Menopausal Belly Fat
19:21
Have you noticed that as you’ve entered menopause, the belly pooch seems to be hanging on, no matter what you do? You’re not alone. This happens for several reasons, including changing hormones and the way your body processes insulin as you age. What if I asked you to take your mind off of your weight for a moment, and focus instead on what your weight is made up of? Your body composition, or the amount of muscle you are carrying compared to the amount of fat, has a huge effect on belly fat—including the dangerous visceral belly fat that is a precursor to disease. In this episode, I’ll walk you through my best tips for increasing muscle mass and getting rid of that hormonal belly, including the exact type of exercise you need to be doing, how often you should be doing it, supplemental movement that enhances your results, and how to fuel your muscles so they grow. Stay tuned to the end because I’ll also share a few tips and tricks to level up your strategy so you can look your best and age healthfully. The Potential Link Between Toxic Exposure and Chronic Illness with Dr. Jill Carnahan
45:59
Why are we seeing such increasing rates of autoimmune disease? How do past traumas and toxic exposures affect our health decades later? My guest is often referred to as the "Sherlock Holmes of Medicine" for solving the cases of the most well-known medical mysteries. Dr. Jill Carnahan, MD., is a board-certified Integrative Holistic Medicine specialist, known as Your Functional Medicine Expert. Utilizing state-of-the-art lab testing and biochemical analysis, she helps each patient discover the root cause of their illness by identifying nutritional or metabolic imbalances that may be contributing to their symptoms. Her new book, Unexpected, is a cross between Dr. Carnahan’s memoir about trauma, healing, and recovery coupled with a personal development/self-help guide designed to give practical advice for those seeking solutions to long-term chronic illness. Dr. Carnahan’s journey with aggressive breast cancer early in life, and the recovery from the side effects of cancer treatment, taught her that autoimmunity is manageable and diet and lifestyle changes have everything to do with it. We are at the edge of a tsunami of autoimmunity due to infectious load and toxic burden—the core drivers of inflammatory illnesses, autoimmunity, and chronic complex illness that are becoming more prevalent each year. I have been anxiously waiting to bring Dr. Carnahan on my podcast to explore this topic, including ways to add healing “input” into your body that allows you to recover at a cellular level and help support your immune system. Plus, Dr. Carnahan has a bunch of free gifts and resources to share with listeners, so you don’t want to miss this one! 10 Warning Signs of Hypothyroidism (Signs of Low Thyroid)
19:25
Just because your standard thyroid tests come back in the normal range, it doesn’t always mean your thyroid is working optimally. Fatigue, unexplained weight gain, and brain fog can all be symptoms of an underactive thyroid—or hypothyroidism. When you’re not producing enough thyroid hormones, other hormones in your body (including insulin and cortisol) can all be affected. This disruption can impact all parts of your body, including your mental health. In this episode, we take a look at hypothyroidism manifestations you might not be aware of, how to get the thyroid tests that will give you a more accurate picture of your thyroid health (spoiler alert: these are not the standard tests your doctor ordered), and how to get the help you need to get your thyroid hormones back to optimal balance. How does The Virgin Diet impact the thyroid? Gut health is a common factor in autoimmunity, and what you eat directly impacts your risk of developing certain conditions, including thyroid issues. How to Combat Shameflammation with Will Cole
32:53
Did you know that the gut and brain are connected? Maybe you’ve heard of the gut-brain axis, and that your diet impacts mental health, but did you know that significant amounts of serotonin and dopamine are made in the gut? To truly heal, it takes both a dietary and mental-health approach. Dr. Will Cole is an expert in functional medicine with a focus on thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalances, and digestive disorders. He is the author of several bestselling books, including The Inflammation Spectrum and Intuitive Fasting, and was one of the first doctors to embrace telehealth as a means of reaching more patients. In this episode, we talk about Dr. Cole’s newest book, Gut Feelings, and the relationship between mental and physical health. We tend to separate the two, but they are actually intimately connected. “Shameflammation,” as Dr. Cole calls it, is the intersection between mental/emotional issues like stress and shame and how that impacts your physical body. He also explores what stress can do to your gut and how practices like meditation and breathwork can help regulate the nervous system. You’ll learn how diet, chronic infections, and nutrient deficiencies impact why you feel the way that you do, specifically when it comes to brain fog, fatigue, and other mental-health concerns. And conversely, how stress, shame, trauma and other mental health issues impact your physical body. Aging Powerfully: 3 Key Actions for Optimal Health with Dr. Anurag Singh
42:53
Frailty doesn’t have to be your reality as you age. With the right approach, it's possible to maintain a vibrant and active lifestyle, even in your 60s, 70s and beyond. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Anurag Singh, the Chief Medical Officer at Timeline Nutrition, who also runs a Switzerland-based research company working to discover and develop novel nutritional compounds that target improvements in mitochondrial health. We delve into the three essential elements that contribute to your overall well-being as you age: diet, exercise, and supplementation. According to Dr. Singh, one of the most important factors is maintaining the health of your mitochondria. With age, these powerhouses of your cells can decline, leaving you feeling tired and unable to do the things you enjoy. You’ll discover how to know if your mitochondrial health is declining and steps you can take to keep them functioning at their best. Muscle health is critical, and maintaining it requires a sufficient intake of protein. After focusing on diet and an active lifestyle, specific supplements can further promote your health and support your energy levels, which we explore in this enlightening discussion. We also discuss the exciting area of mitophagy, the process by which faulty mitochondria are eliminated and replaced with healthy ones. Dr. Singh shares information about a test he developed and the latest research on urolithin A, a food-based compound that plays a role in mitophagy and cellular health in ground-breaking ways. The Hidden Biological Switch That Can Be the Source of Weight & Fat Gain with Dr. Richard Johnson
58:29
Why do so many people struggle with weight gain and obesity? Here’s one reason: A biological switch in our bodies designed to protect us from starvation can become stuck in the “on” position. This is a hidden source of weight gain, heart disease, insulin resistance, and other health challenges. But it’s not a life sentence; this switch can be turned off. In this episode, JJ talks with one of her heroes, Dr. Richard Johnson. He’s a practicing physician and an internationally recognized medical scientist researching obesity and diabetes, with a special interest in the role of sugar, especially fructose. Dr. Johnson explains why fructose is so different from other sugars and why it can be so problematic. You’ll learn why fructose can encourage fat storage, how this switch is being activated when we’re not in survival situations, the types of foods that can activate the switch and the behaviors that can turn things around. They also discuss leaky gut and its relation to food allergies, the role of fructose in damaging gut health, and how this sugar may be associated with dementia. This conversation gives you specific things you can do to help prevent this survival switch from causing weight gain and other health challenges in the long run. |

How You’re Doing Keto All Wrong with Dr. Steven Gundry

Wherever you stand on the keto diet, this is a conversation worth hearing. In this episode, JJ talks with Dr. Steven Gundry, a cardiothoracic surgeon who became a nutrition geek, about his book, Unlocking the Keto Code: The Revolutionary Science of Keto That Offers More Benefits Without Deprivation. First, Dr. Gundry talks about how he became interested in nutrition and lifestyle for heart health. Then, they delve into the common misuses of the keto diet and how it can be upgraded for optimal results. Ketones are NOT a miraculous fuel for the brain, as many people believe. After explaining why the body can’t run on ketones and fats alone, Dr. Gundry explains the concept of uncoupling and what it means for your health. You don’t have to restrict carbs to reap the benefits of ketosis. In fact, he explains how you can use other methods, as well as plant compounds called polyphenols to “unlock” the process of uncoupling for losing weight and better health. This fascinating conversation also touches on heart health: the truth about cholesterol and why it might not actually be the sole cause of plaque and heart disease. Learning How to Process Grief in a Landscape of Loss with Dr. Sherry Walling
32:18
Your body keeps score. And if you don’t learn ways to release trauma from your body – whether it’s from death or the loss of anything else – this can lead to chronic stress, decreased immune function, difficulty in regulating metabolism, weight gain, and even contribute to cancer, heart disease, and other chronic health problems. But, we’re not taught to navigate grief in our culture. How do we properly heal, balance, and reset our nervous systems? In this episode, JJ talks with Dr. Sherry Walling, a clinical psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author, and mental health advocate. Dr. Walling was catapulted into the world of grief and darkness after she lost her dad to cancer and her brother to alcohol addiction and depression. She needed to find a way to honor the grief and loss, while also staying in the fullness and beauty of life. In our culture, we’re taught to numb out or to get back up and go on with our lives. But we need to learn to grieve better because time doesn’t heal all wounds. “If we don't actively grieve, we're going to passively grieve,” says Dr. Walling. “And that creates a lot of complication for us in our body's systems.” Dr. Walling starts with the simplest place to start navigating grief. Then, she moves into deeper ways to move through our grief actively. When you do address your grief, it can lead to amazing shifts in your physical, mental, and emotional health – and we’re all navigating some type (or types) of grief in our lives. Don’t miss this empowering, uplifting conversation that we all need to hear! Listen to Dr. Sherry’s playlist to soothe and encourage you in the darkest moments of grief.

Uncovering the Root Cause of Chronic Illness to Boost Health and Resilience with Dr. Aaron Hartman
42:33
Do you suffer from brain fog, gut issues, aches and pains, or some other type of chronic condition that limits your ability to feel healthy and happy? JJ recently spoke with Integrative and Functional Medicine Practitioner Dr. Aaron Hartman about complex ""mystery"" illnesses that are actually more common than you realize—and why our current healthcare system often overlooks the root cause of the problem. Dr. Hartman first became interested in mystery illness diagnosis when he and his wife adopted their first daughter, Anna. At two years old, Anna had cerebral palsy and countless dietary and neurological issues, and doctors told them she would never crawl, walk, or talk. They went to specialist after specialist, and many wanted to ""treat"" Anna with invasive surgical procedures that often seemed to have no benefit. It was then that Dr. Hartman and his wife started questioning the experts if something didn't feel right, which led them to functional medicine. Through their own in-depth research, they found positive strategies that worked for Anna—many of which were incredibly basic, including eating real food, exercise, and quality sleep—and today she is 16 years old, walking with crutches, loves playing chess, and ""won't stop talking”. Dr. Hartman now works with numerous patients in his practice that are suffering from complicated, chronic illnesses, and JJ speaks to him about the importance of starting with the basics (gut, stress, and sleep) to help them feel better. The bottom line: People don't just get sick overnight. Years of unhealthy eating, too much stress, and poor sleep can bring us to a point where all it takes is one triggering event to bring our health crashing down around us. In this episode, you'll learn what things precede these mystery illnesses, what triggers them, and what you can do right now to increase your health and resilience. Research shows that only 12% of adults are metabolically healthy. Since that data was published, metabolic conditions including obesity and diabetes have only become worse. In this episode of Ask the Health Expert, cardiothoracic surgeon and bestselling author Dr. Philip Ovadia explains why the answers to these problems can be found in metabolic health. As a morbidly obese and pre-diabetic surgeon, Dr. Ovadia realized that he was going to end up on his own operating table. He lost over a hundred pounds and reversed his pre-diabetes. With that same focus and passion, he helps patients reach those same results. In this podcast, Dr. Ovadia talks about why our modern food environment has hijacked our health and made us metabolically unhealthy.
