How Our Understanding of Health Has Been Hijacked with Colleen & Jason Wachob

If you’ve spent any time at all in the wellness world over the past decade, you’re familiar with mindbodygreen, the premier health and wellness website for articles, courses, certifications, and more. In this episode, I’m so excited to host the founders, Jason and Colleen Wachob—it’s also the first time I’ve had a couple on the podcast at the same time!

Colleen and Jason have just released their new book, The Joy Of Well-Being: A Practical Guide to a Happy, Healthy, and Long Life, which challenges our definition of self-improvement by revealing what a healthy lifestyle looks like at the fundamental level—and how it’s not what you think.

In our current health-influencer culture, we are bombarded with information about what we should be doing. But this information often focuses on the latest trends and assumes you have endless time and money to tackle every new health fad that comes your way. To top it off, the information you get is often conflicting.

Colleen and Jason’s goal is to help you cut through the noise and find a recipe for well-being that brings joy and happiness to your life and focuses on emotional health as much as physical health.

You’ll be so encouraged by this conversation and come away with a few practical tips on how you can bring more well-being into your life today, without sacrificing all of your precious time and resources.

I Tracked My Macros for 30 Days, Here's What Happened...

Do you know how much protein you eat in a day? How about fat and carbohydrates? Most of us are pretty unaware of how much of each of these macros we are getting in our diets, which is where macro tracking—not calorie tracking!—can be a helpful tool.

I always say that WHAT you eat is more important than how much you eat, but making sure you are hitting your protein-intake goals and getting in the right amount of carbs and fats is another important factor in reaching your ideal body composition and feeling your best.

I used a macro-tracking app to log my protein, carbs, and fats (along with the diversity of plant fiber I consumed) for a month, and it helped me dial in the ratio that makes me feel and perform at my best. In this episode, I’m sharing my results and giving you the info you need to make sure you are getting the right amount of each macronutrient in your diet to look and feel your best, too.

I’ll also share some tips on how to uplevel your diet even further with a few of my simple and effective hacks, so stay tuned until the end!

How to Stop Being So Effing Hungry with Amy Shah

When I heard the title of my guest’s new book, Why Am I So Effing Hungry?, I knew I had to have her on the podcast ASAP!

Amy Shah, MD, is a double board-certified medical doctor and nutrition expert with training from Cornell, Columbia, and Harvard Universities. Drawing from her background in internal medicine and allergy/immunology, as well as her own wellness journey, she has dedicated her practice to helping her patients feel better and live healthier through her integrative and holistic approach to wellness.

She was named one of mindbodygreen’s Top 100 Women in Wellness to Watch in 2015 and appears regularly on national television shows, magazines, and podcasts. New predictions state that we will see a 35% rise in diabetes rates by 2060, along with a doubling of the number of people with heart disease.

These numbers are frightening and beg the question, why, as a society, are we so addicted to food? In this episode, Dr. Shah and I dive deep into why we are so hungry all the time, how the food industry fuels our food addictions, the role of dopamine in food cravings, and whether or not it’s even possible to eat intuitively in a processed food world. But it’s not all doom and gloom!

I like to say that little hinges swing big doors, and Dr. Shah offers practical, easy-to-implement steps you can take to reset your hunger signals and restore your metabolic health.

Stay tuned until the end, because we’ll tell you how to get your hands on the “secret chapter” of Dr. Shah’s new book—it’s full of tips and tricks you won’t want to miss!

Coming Off Ozempic for Weight Loss - STOP Weight Regain By Doing THIS

Have you considered taking one of the popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, but you’re worried about weight regain once you stop taking the drug? Listen up! I’ve got some tips that will help you avoid some of the dreaded side effects and get the best results from using these medications.

While I always recommend a diet and lifestyle approach to weight loss, the bottom line is this: if you are weight-loss resistant, these solutions could give you the edge you need to finally move the needle. However, the last thing you want to do is lose precious metabolism-supporting muscle. One of the downsides to using a drug like Ozempic is that it may prompt equal amounts of muscle and fat loss. Even though you see the number on the scale drop, your fat-to-muscle ratio may actually move in the wrong direction.

Without adequate muscle on your body, you will have a lowered metabolism and a harder time keeping your body from storing fat once you stop taking the drug. In this episode, I’m going to give you the exact strategies you need to put in place—whether or not you are using Ozempic—to increase your muscle mass, hold on to your skeletal muscle, and rev up your metabolism so that you can achieve lasting weight loss results and an ideal body composition for the long term.

Your thyroid is key to balancing hormones and losing weight, and it’s also the central hub for many health conditions. In this episode of the podcast, I’m talking to Dr. Amie Hornaman, otherwise known as the Thyroid Fixer.

As a thyroid specialist, she is on a mission to help thyroid patients around the world and give them their lives back. While competing in fitness and figure competitions, Dr. Hornaman experienced sudden unexplained weight gain and the frustration of visiting doctor after doctor with no answer as to why her body was rebelling against her.

It wasn’t until she found an integrative practitioner who gave her the right thyroid tests that she finally got a diagnosis and was able to treat her hypothyroidism. Join us as we dive deep into the symptoms of hypothyroidism that you need to be on the lookout for, the lab tests needed to diagnose it, and the medications to treat it. Plus, we’ll explore many of the lifestyle changes you can make to take care of your thyroid function and support your metabolism.

7 Most Common Food Intolerances You Never Knew You Had

What if the healthy foods you are eating are actually hurting you—and you don’t even realize it? Maybe you’re struggling with fatigue, joint aches, bloating, headaches, digestive issues, cravings, autoimmune issues, skin breakouts, or you just can’t seem to lose the weight. It could be because of hidden food intolerances in your diet.

In this episode, I’m going to share with you the top food intolerances I see time and time again, how I figured them out, and how you can determine if they’re problem foods for you, too. You’ve probably heard the term “leaky gut,” which is where food particles can pass through a damaged gut lining into your body where the immune system sees them as intruders. It then sounds the alarm and sets off a host of unwanted symptoms. This phenomenon occurs all too often and many people are completely unaware that the foods they are eating, even those that seem healthy, are actually the cause of the symptoms they are experiencing.

You don’t want to miss this one, because I’m going to share with you why certain foods are more problematic than others, and give you tips on how you can make simple swaps that will help you reach your health and weight goals.

Your nervous system is key to helping you stay healthy as you age. So it only makes sense that keeping the nervous system functioning optimally is a key component to long-term health.

My guest on this episode is Dave Asprey, the original biohacker and founder of Upgrade Labs. He is the author of multiple New York Times bestsellers and the creator of Bulletproof Coffee and Danger Coffee. He also hosts the award-winning podcast, Human Upgrade. In this episode, we talk about the importance of taking care of your nervous system and the various methods of biohacking that can be done with little to no money to improve your overall health and well-being.

In a past life, Dave used to overtrain and under fuel, which led to few results from his efforts. He figured out that he had to fix his nervous system and learn to nourish his body the right way in order to reach his goals. In his new book, Smarter, Not Harder, he explains that you don't need to overwork yourself to get the results you want, but you do need to take care of your nervous system and work smarter.

His new project, Upgrade Labs, the world's first biohacking center, is using the power of AI to find new ways to send signals to the body to make it change in the way we want. The #1 Secret to Losing Menopausal Belly Fat

Have you noticed that as you’ve entered menopause, the belly pooch seems to be hanging on, no matter what you do? You’re not alone. This happens for several reasons, including changing hormones and the way your body processes insulin as you age. What if I asked you to take your mind off of your weight for a moment, and focus instead on what your weight is made up of?

Your body composition, or the amount of muscle you are carrying compared to the amount of fat, has a huge effect on belly fat—including the dangerous visceral belly fat that is a precursor to disease. In this episode, I’ll walk you through my best tips for increasing muscle mass and getting rid of that hormonal belly, including the exact type of exercise you need to be doing, how often you should be doing it, supplemental movement that enhances your results, and how to fuel your muscles so they grow.

Stay tuned to the end because I’ll also share a few tips and tricks to level up your strategy so you can look your best and age healthfully.

The Potential Link Between Toxic Exposure and Chronic Illness with Dr. Jill Carnahan

Why are we seeing such increasing rates of autoimmune disease? How do past traumas and toxic exposures affect our health decades later?

My guest is often referred to as the "Sherlock Holmes of Medicine" for solving the cases of the most well-known medical mysteries. Dr. Jill Carnahan, MD., is a board-certified Integrative Holistic Medicine specialist, known as Your Functional Medicine Expert. Utilizing state-of-the-art lab testing and biochemical analysis, she helps each patient discover the root cause of their illness by identifying nutritional or metabolic imbalances that may be contributing to their symptoms.

Her new book, Unexpected, is a cross between Dr. Carnahan’s memoir about trauma, healing, and recovery coupled with a personal development/self-help guide designed to give practical advice for those seeking solutions to long-term chronic illness.

Dr. Carnahan’s journey with aggressive breast cancer early in life, and the recovery from the side effects of cancer treatment, taught her that autoimmunity is manageable and diet and lifestyle changes have everything to do with it. We are at the edge of a tsunami of autoimmunity due to infectious load and toxic burden—the core drivers of inflammatory illnesses, autoimmunity, and chronic complex illness that are becoming more prevalent each year.

I have been anxiously waiting to bring Dr. Carnahan on my podcast to explore this topic, including ways to add healing “input” into your body that allows you to recover at a cellular level and help support your immune system. Plus, Dr. Carnahan has a bunch of free gifts and resources to share with listeners, so you don’t want to miss this one!

10 Warning Signs of Hypothyroidism (Signs of Low Thyroid)

Just because your standard thyroid tests come back in the normal range, it doesn’t always mean your thyroid is working optimally.

Fatigue, unexplained weight gain, and brain fog can all be symptoms of an underactive thyroid—or hypothyroidism. When you’re not producing enough thyroid hormones, other hormones in your body (including insulin and cortisol) can all be affected. This disruption can impact all parts of your body, including your mental health.

In this episode, we take a look at hypothyroidism manifestations you might not be aware of, how to get the thyroid tests that will give you a more accurate picture of your thyroid health (spoiler alert: these are not the standard tests your doctor ordered), and how to get the help you need to get your thyroid hormones back to optimal balance.

How does The Virgin Diet impact the thyroid? Gut health is a common factor in autoimmunity, and what you eat directly impacts your risk of developing certain conditions, including thyroid issues. Tune in to find out how I use diet and lifestyle habits to keep my thyroid in optimal working health!

10 Shocking Cold Plunge Benefits You Never Knew About

Are you looking for a natural mood energizer that can help support everything from your workout, recovery, and stress relief to immune and heart health? In this week’s episode, I'm going to show you how to chill out and level up your health with cold therapy.

Cold therapy refers to exposing your body to cold water or air, cooler than 59°F. The concept has been around for millennia, but it’s gained popularity recently as studies are showing the potential benefits for everything from mental health and mood to a healthy inflammatory response and better metabolism.

Exposure to cold water causes the blood vessels to constrict and push all of the blood
toward the organs. As a result, the blood acquires more oxygen and becomes super nutrient-rich. As the body starts heating up again, the blood vessels expand, allowing oxygen and that nutrient-rich blood to flow back to the tissues. This increased circulation can help support focus and concentration because the brain is getting oxygenated—but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the benefits of cold immersion!

I’ve been using my cold plunge for a while now, and I can’t say enough about the benefits I have personally experienced. Tune in to learn about the 10 incredible benefits of cold therapy that just might convince you to give it a try!

Personalized Nutrition for Weight Loss, Energy, and Health with Dr. Vincent Pedre

What if you could personalize your diet to help keep you in optimal health, drop the extra pounds, and feel your energized best? And what if there were a quiz that helped you determine exactly how to do it?

I’m joined this week by Dr. Vincent Pedre, medical director at Pedre Integrative Health founder/CEO of Happy Gut Life. He believes the gut is the gateway to excellent wellness, and his newest book, The GutSMART Protocol—a 14-day personalized gut-healing plan based on the GutSMART Quiz—is the culmination of years of research and clinical experience as a functional gut-health expert.

In this episode, Dr. Pedre discusses the importance of gut health in overall wellness and how a disrupted gut microbiome can lead to various health issues. He also talks about the impact of stress, diet, and environmental toxins on digestive health and provides tips on how to improve it through lifestyle changes, such as incorporating fermented foods and probiotics into the diet and reducing stress levels.

In his words, “Microbial diversity is the holy grail of your health. The more diverse your gut microbiome is, the less inflammation you're gonna have in your body.”

We’ll answer questions like: How can getting out in nature help improve our gut microbial diversity? How can we reduce our use of antibiotics? How do fiber and fermented foods affect our gut microbiome?

Plus, you’ll learn how our gut bacteria can affect weight loss and metabolism as we discuss the exciting new research that’s emerging!

Why Your Blood Sugar Is CRITICAL To Fat Loss Over 40

What if I told you something as simple as your blood sugar could be the key to successful fat loss as you age? I want you to throw out everything you've learned about calorie counting, avoiding fat, and other outdated weight-loss advice. I'll walk you through how to eat your way to your ideal body composition.

Blood-sugar balance is important for fat loss because it helps the body burn fat more efficiently. When blood sugar isn't balanced, the body is more likely to store fat and become resistant to the effects of insulin, leaving you less able to access that stored fat for energy.

My #1 tool to help you stabilize blood sugar is always protein! In this episode, you’ll learn about the impact of protein on your fat-loss goals along with specific nutrients that can help manage your glucose response and keep your body in fat-burning mode throughout the day. I also share the foods to avoid that can sabotage your blood sugar.

But it’s not just what you eat…it’s also when you eat. And let’s not forget the importance of quality sleep and stress management. I’ll talk about all of this and give you some actionable tips and tricks to keep your blood sugar balanced and your weight down.

William W. Li, MD, is an internationally renowned physician, scientist and author of the New York Times bestseller, Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. His groundbreaking work has led to the development of more than 30 new medical treatments and impacts care for more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease and obesity.

He walks us through the grocery store to help us choose the foods that stoke our metabolic fire. Ingredients that are good for our metabolism have been core ingredients in the recipes from the Mediterranean and Asia—two of the oldest, most delicious, and healthiest cuisine food traditions in the world.

I Quit Drinking for 28 Days and This Is What Happened

I broke up with my Cabernet! It may be a temporary breakup, but the incredible things that happened have turned my nightly wine date into more of an occasional hangout.

After my husband and I decided to take a break from alcohol for a couple of months, I immediately started sleeping better. I lost my little bit of belly bloat. My fasting blood glucose level dropped in the morning. I have more energy.

If you've been thinking about trying dry January, sober October, or just taking a break from alcohol, let’s unpack all of it. The good, the bad, the ugly. So you can make the best decision for you, in terms of your weight loss, your sleep, your energy, and your overall health.

In this episode, we’ll answer questions like:

- Are there health benefits of alcohol?
- How does alcohol impact fat loss?
- What is it about alcohol that makes it toxic?
- What is the correlation between alcohol and cancer?
- How does alcohol affect mental health?
- What impact does alcohol have on gut health?
- What is the effect of alcohol on sleep quality?

There may be some potential benefits to alcohol, and we’ll also talk about how often and what forms of alcohol to drink to enjoy the pleasure of that glass of wine without all of the negative side effects.

How to Combat Shameflammation with Will Cole

Did you know that the gut and brain are connected? Maybe you’ve heard of the gut-brain axis, and that your diet impacts mental health, but did you know that significant amounts of serotonin and dopamine are made in the gut? To truly heal, it takes both a dietary and mental-health approach.

Dr. Will Cole is an expert in functional medicine with a focus on thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalances, and digestive disorders. He is the author of several bestselling books, including The Inflammation Spectrum and Intuitive Fasting, and was one of the first doctors to embrace telehealth as a means of reaching more patients.

In this episode, we talk about Dr. Cole’s newest book, Gut Feelings, and the relationship between mental and physical health. We tend to separate the two, but they are actually intimately connected.

“Shameflammation,” as Dr. Cole calls it, is the intersection between mental/emotional issues like stress and shame and how that impacts your physical body. He also explores what stress can do to your gut and how practices like meditation and breathwork can help regulate the nervous system.

You’ll learn how diet, chronic infections, and nutrient deficiencies impact why you feel the way that you do, specifically when it comes to brain fog, fatigue, and other mental-health concerns. And conversely, how stress, shame, trauma and other mental health issues impact your physical body.

15 Major Warnings to Know Before Using Ozempic for Weight Loss

Aging Powerfully: 3 Key Actions for Optimal Health with Dr. Anurag Singh

Frailty doesn’t have to be your reality as you age. With the right approach, it's possible to maintain a vibrant and active lifestyle, even in your 60s, 70s and beyond. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Anurag Singh, the Chief Medical Officer at Timeline Nutrition, who also runs a Switzerland-based research company working to discover and develop novel nutritional compounds that target improvements in mitochondrial health.

We delve into the three essential elements that contribute to your overall well-being as you age: diet, exercise, and supplementation. According to Dr. Singh, one of the most important factors is maintaining the health of your mitochondria. With age, these powerhouses of your cells can decline, leaving you feeling tired and unable to do the things you enjoy.

You’ll discover how to know if your mitochondrial health is declining and steps you can take to keep them functioning at their best. Muscle health is critical, and maintaining it requires a sufficient intake of protein. After focusing on diet and an active lifestyle, specific supplements can further promote your health and support your energy levels, which we explore in this enlightening discussion.

We also discuss the exciting area of mitophagy, the process by which faulty mitochondria are eliminated and replaced with healthy ones. Dr. Singh shares information about a test he developed and the latest research on urolithin A, a food-based compound that plays a role in mitophagy and cellular health in ground-breaking ways.

The DANGERS of the Kardashian Diet No One Is Talking About

In just 3 weeks, Kim Kardashian lost 16 pounds to fit into a dress for the Met Gala. I’ve helped actors get ready for roles, including Brandon Ralph when he debuted as Superman, and I see this situation as similar to getting ready for a film. In this episode, I critique Kim’s weight loss plan, revealing the good and the bad—and what you actually want to do for fast and lasting fat loss.

You’ll learn all about the diet and exercise plan Kim went on. To be honest, some of the things she did, I’d do myself and recommend to others! But other parts of her plan have some serious health risks, and will cause you to actually hold on to weight, not lose it!

Ultimately, Kim Kardashian’s diet may work for a one-night role, but it’s not a healthy or sustainable solution for long-term weight loss. If you want to lose weight fast, I reveal what you need to do to make it healthy and sustainable.

If you’re going to go for fast weight loss, you’ve got to do it right, or it’ll backfire and you’ll have another yo-yo diet on your hands. Be sure you listen to the whole conversation to get my nutrition and exercise tips, plus two strategies I recommend for boosting your metabolism and losing body fat.

How to Heal Your Gut | Stop Bloating & Digestion Issues!!

Do you struggle with gas and bloating and other common functional stomach problems? In this episode, I discuss five steps to resolving your gut issues for good. The good news is, you can turn this around quickly. You’ll ditch the stretch pants and get into your skinny jeans before you know it!

The most important thing you need to do is remove Hi-FI food from your diet, which can contribute to leaky gut. This can launch an immune attack and wreak havoc on your body, which can exacerbate gas and bloating, constipation, pain, fatigue, and more.

In addition to swapping out the foods that are harming you, you want to add gut-healing foods. I talk about eight foods and why science says they benefit your GI system. Lowering your sugar impact is also crucially important. What can you have instead? I provide some of my favorite low-sugar-impact options, so you can still enjoy some sweetness in your life.

Stress has a massive impact on your gut, so another thing you want to do is improve your stress tolerance. I include some of my favorite ways to help regulate your nervous system. Because just like we take our muscles to the gym, we need to tone up our nervous system, too.

Redefining Menopause: Why We Need A New Narrative with Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz

Menopause changes your life... and your health. It can be a tough transition, but we need to shift our perspective on this important time. Menopause is not a disease; it’s a normal stage of life—and it’s a privilege to still be alive.

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz, a conventional board-certified OB-GYN who also practices integrative, holistic, and Ayurvedic medicine. We discuss the ways that the stages of menopause change your life for the better, and what you can do to protect your health throughout the transition.

As you start to enter perimenopause and menopause, you can make adjustments and build healthy habits to mitigate long-term health issues, including heart disease, which is not discussed enough. The place to start is with hormones, according to Dr. Gilberg-Lenz, and also incorporating botanicals, herbs, and supplements as well.

Another big factor that needs to be addressed is lifestyle. You’ll learn about adjustments you should make and why you must make yourself a priority during this time. Because with the right approach, your fifties can be a truly magical decade.

Top 5 Foods to Boost Metabolism Naturally for Women Over 40

Myth debunked: your metabolism doesn't slow down automatically with age. But there are a few factors you need to consider that can have a negative impact. In this episode, I discuss why you might have a slow metabolism, the two things you want to check if you’re over 40, and steps you can take to have a faster metabolism.

If you want to lose weight, you must make sure you’re holding on to muscle mass and getting optimal protein in your diet. I discuss how you can accomplish both. Another important, but often overlooked, factor to address is low thyroid function.

In this episode, I highlight specific spices, beverages, and foods that are shown to support a healthy blood-sugar response to a meal, help burn fat, and support a healthy metabolism. You don’t want to miss the daily beverage I drink that can promote fat and calorie burning... even at rest.

To avoid weight struggles, hair loss, mood disruptions, and other challenges women often experience with age, you must take steps to maintain a healthy metabolism. It’s worth it—because when you embrace aging powerfully, you can feel great in your 40s and beyond!

The Hidden Biological Switch That Can Be the Source of Weight & Fat Gain with Dr. Richard Johnson

Why do so many people struggle with weight gain and obesity? Here’s one reason: A biological switch in our bodies designed to protect us from starvation can become stuck in the “on” position. This is a hidden source of weight gain, heart disease, insulin resistance, and other health challenges. But it’s not a life sentence; this switch can be turned off.

In this episode, JJ talks with one of her heroes, Dr. Richard Johnson. He’s a practicing physician and an internationally recognized medical scientist researching obesity and diabetes, with a special interest in the role of sugar, especially fructose.

Dr. Johnson explains why fructose is so different from other sugars and why it can be so problematic. You’ll learn why fructose can encourage fat storage, how this switch is being activated when we’re not in survival situations, the types of foods that can activate the switch and the behaviors that can turn things around.

They also discuss leaky gut and its relation to food allergies, the role of fructose in damaging gut health, and how this sugar may be associated with dementia. This conversation gives you specific things you can do to help prevent this survival switch from causing weight gain and other health challenges in the long run.

How You’re Doing Keto All Wrong with Dr. Steven Gundry

Wherever you stand on the keto diet, this is a conversation worth hearing. In this episode, JJ talks with Dr. Steven Gundry, a cardiothoracic surgeon who became a nutrition geek, about his book, Unlocking the Keto Code: The Revolutionary Science of Keto That Offers More Benefits Without Deprivation.

First, Dr. Gundry talks about how he became interested in nutrition and lifestyle for heart health. Then, they delve into the common misuses of the keto diet and how it can be upgraded for optimal results.

Ketones are NOT a miraculous fuel for the brain, as many people believe. After explaining why the body can’t run on ketones and fats alone, Dr. Gundry explains the concept of uncoupling and what it means for your health.

You don’t have to restrict carbs to reap the benefits of ketosis. In fact, he explains how you can use other methods, as well as plant compounds called polyphenols to “unlock” the process of uncoupling for losing weight and better health.

This fascinating conversation also touches on heart health: the truth about cholesterol and why it might not actually be the sole cause of plaque and heart disease.

Learning How to Process Grief in a Landscape of Loss with Dr. Sherry Walling

Your body keeps score. And if you don’t learn ways to release trauma from your body – whether it’s from death or the loss of anything else – this can lead to chronic stress, decreased immune function, difficulty in regulating metabolism, weight gain, and even contribute to cancer, heart disease, and other chronic health problems.

But, we’re not taught to navigate grief in our culture. How do we properly heal, balance, and reset our nervous systems? In this episode, JJ talks with Dr. Sherry Walling, a clinical psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author, and mental health advocate. Dr. Walling was catapulted into the world of grief and darkness after she lost her dad to cancer and her brother to alcohol addiction and depression. She needed to find a way to honor the grief and loss, while also staying in the fullness and beauty of life.

In our culture, we’re taught to numb out or to get back up and go on with our lives. But we need to learn to grieve better because time doesn’t heal all wounds. “If we don't actively grieve, we're going to passively grieve,” says Dr. Walling. “And that creates a lot of complication for us in our body's systems.”

Dr. Walling starts with the simplest place to start navigating grief. Then, she moves into deeper ways to move through our grief actively. When you do address your grief, it can lead to amazing shifts in your physical, mental, and emotional health – and we’re all navigating some type (or types) of grief in our lives. Don’t miss this empowering, uplifting conversation that we all need to hear!

[Beginnings & Breakthroughs] Gut Healing + Getting Back on Track with Donna Barber

For many people, the pandemic was a catalyst to make positive changes and level up their diet and lifestyle habits. For others, it was an unexpected setback on the journey to a healthy weight and body. Tune in as JJ talks with longtime Virgin Diet advocate Donna Barber about her powerful first experience with The Virgin Diet, how living through a pandemic impacted her eating habits, and why supporting her gut will be critical in the days to come.

When she worked as a librarian, Donna would notice that the most popular topics people would search for were health and weight loss. One day, a woman dropped a book in front of her that changed her life forever: The Virgin Diet. "I kept picking it up and putting it down, thinking it was probably just another gimmick," shared Donna. But after following the plan for a week, she lost 7 pounds. And after four months, she lost 30 pounds—and says it was like winning the lottery.

But Donna, like a lot of folks, struggled during the pandemic. Stuck at home, she found it harder and harder to eat well and stick to her healthy habits… and the weight crept back on. Uncovering the Root Cause of Chronic Illness to Boost Health and Resilience with Dr. Aaron Hartman

Do you suffer from brain fog, gut issues, aches and pains, or some other type of chronic condition that limits your ability to feel healthy and happy? JJ recently spoke with Integrative and Functional Medicine Practitioner Dr. Aaron Hartman about complex ""mystery"" illnesses that are actually more common than you realize—and why our current healthcare system often overlooks the root cause of the problem.

Dr. Hartman first became interested in mystery illness diagnosis when he and his wife adopted their first daughter, Anna. At two years old, Anna had cerebral palsy and countless dietary and neurological issues, and doctors told them she would never crawl, walk, or talk. They went to specialist after specialist, and many wanted to ""treat"" Anna with invasive surgical procedures that often seemed to have no benefit. It was then that Dr. Hartman and his wife started questioning the experts if something didn't feel right, which led them to functional medicine.

Through their own in-depth research, they found positive strategies that worked for Anna—many of which were incredibly basic, including eating real food, exercise, and quality sleep—and today she is 16 years old, walking with crutches, loves playing chess, and ""won't stop talking”. Dr. Hartman now works with numerous patients in his practice that are suffering from complicated, chronic illnesses, and JJ speaks to him about the importance of starting with the basics (gut, stress, and sleep) to help them feel better.

The bottom line: People don't just get sick overnight. Years of unhealthy eating, too much stress, and poor sleep can bring us to a point where all it takes is one triggering event to bring our health crashing down around us. In this episode, you'll learn what things precede these mystery illnesses, what triggers them, and what you can do right now to increase your health and resilience. Tune in and take the first step toward feeling better!

Finding the Root Cause of Adrenal Fatigue with Dr. Tricia Pingel

We live in incredibly stressful times. Many of us almost always feel “on,” glued to our electronic devices and juggling constant demands. While a little bit of stress can be helpful, most of us experience far too much… and the results of extreme stress take their toll on our adrenal health.

In this episode of The Virgin Anti-Diet Show, naturopathic medical doctor and adrenal fatigue expert, Dr. Tricia Pingel, talks about how supporting adrenal health can help you recover from stress.

Dr. Pingel struggled with symptoms of adrenal fatigue throughout her life, which doctors misdiagnosed or completely ignored.

Through naturopathic medicine, she discovered the root cause of her symptoms: Stress; which can adversely impact adrenal health, create hormonal imbalances, and more.

Today, Dr. Pingel helps others recover from adrenal fatigue by finding the root cause. She learned that every single condition her patients struggle with – including thyroid issues, gut health, and hormonal imbalances – can be linked to (and are often aggravated by) stress.

When they recover from stress and restore adrenal health, Dr. Pingel finds that her patients lose weight. They feel better. They sleep better.

In this podcast, you’ll learn the symptoms that Dr. Pingel looks for, how the hormone
cortisol can help or harm your body’s ability to handle stress, and the labs you need to request from your doctor (many doctors aren’t doing all of these tests).

Plus, you’ll learn about the one nutrient that stress depletes most, the tragic event in JJ’s life that taught her about stress management, and how extreme stress depletes many other nutrients that can also impair your immune system.

You’ll also learn about Dr. Pingel’s 4 ways to help people recover from stress and adrenal fatigue, including the type of exercise to do if extreme stress leaves you drained, how to train your sympathetic nervous system to handle stress better, and how meditation can help you manage stress and lose weight.

By focusing on adrenal health, you can recover from stress, too. Dr. Pingel provides powerful, effective ways to create calm and restore adrenal health so that stress doesn’t overtake your life. Grab a notepad, because you won’t want to miss this incredibly topical podcast!

Preventing Disease through Metabolic Health with Dr. Philip Ovadia

Research shows that only 12% of adults are metabolically healthy. Since that data was published, metabolic conditions including obesity and diabetes have only become worse.

In this episode of Ask the Health Expert, cardiothoracic surgeon and bestselling author Dr. Philip Ovadia explains why the answers to these problems can be found in metabolic health.

As a morbidly obese and pre-diabetic surgeon, Dr. Ovadia realized that he was going to end up on his own operating table.

He tried everything he learned in medical school: The same advice he gave to patients to eat less, move more, and pay attention to the U S. Dietary Guidelines.

Eventually, Dr. Ovadia found that by focusing on metabolic health, he was able to improve his own health. He lost over a hundred pounds and reversed his pre-diabetes.

With that same focus and passion, he helps patients reach those same results.

In this podcast, Dr. Ovadia talks about why our modern food environment has hijacked our health and made us metabolically unhealthy.

He explains the difference between clean and dirty processed foods, the link between disease and poor metabolic health, and why you may be metabolically unhealthy even if you are normal weight or even underweight.

Plus, Dr. Ovadia provides 5 health markers to help you shift gears and reclaim your metabolic health. In just 30 days, these strategies can create a measurable impact on your metabolic health.
