506 - My #1 Trick to Staying on Track
12:10

Kathi Lipp is flying solo today and is bringing you her very own #1 trick for staying on task. Do you have unfinished tasks during the day? Kathi wants to help you solve that problem with "The List."

To make your own list, find a notebook that makes you happy and write down the things you need to do - ALL the things you need to do - even if that includes taking a shower. It's that easy!
Keeping a list will:

  • Help you get stuff done - You have a visual representation of your work
  • Prioritize - Not all tasks are of equal importance or time sensitive
  • Keep your mind clear - Writing it down means you don't have to keep thinking about it and can focus on the task at hand

Things on your list should take you 5 minutes, so you can keep crossing things off all day long. Once you accomplish a task, you can cross it off the list. And doesn't crossing things off just feel great?

If you enjoy this podcast, please give us a rating and a short review wherever you listen! This helps us get noticed and spread some more joy and helpful tips. Thank you!

An evening routine takes care of our future self and sets us up for great success the following day. Listen in to learn how an evening routine can:

  • Set the tone for your day
  • Impact your entire tomorrow
  • Take care of your future self
  • Help avoid decision fatigue

504 - Back to Basics
18:50

Kathi and Roger Lipp are here with helpful decluttering and downsizing tips based on personal experience. This power couple has gotten rid of HALF of their stuff TWICE.

Now you may be thinking, "Kathi! That's crazy! I can't get rid of half of my stuff!" The great news is that you don't have to. Let Kathi and Roger break down their helpful strategies they learned when purging their living space.

Let's talk about categories. Maybe you have a lot of jewelry. Make your goal to sort through that jewelry and get rid of the half you don't wear, like, or find uncomfortable.

How do you make a decision when you have too much of a category?
Kathi suggests picking up each item and consider how much you actually like it, and if you have something similar that you like better? Get rid of those repeat items that no longer serve you.

Having too many choices day to day eliminates how much we value the things we have. And giving away your stuff could help bless people with the things they need. Keep what you love and get rid of the rest. You don't need the Tupperware you lost the lid to.

Remember to give us a rating wherever you listen to podcasts, thank you!

480 - Buried in Busyness?
28:43

Kathi is here today with Becky Keife, author of The Simple Difference. They are leaning more heavily on the live more life aspect of being clutter-free. Kathi and Becky explore how every small kindness makes a big impact and we can incorporate it into our everyday life. Many of our clutter problems are often rooted in living in the past or the future, causing us to neglect the present. Join Kathi and Becky’s conversation to learn things we can do right now that help with being clutter-free and making a difference through kindness, including:

  • Being where your feet are
  • Live eyes wide open
  • Consider your STEM resources

The Simple Difference: How Every Small Kindness Makes a Big Impact

We’ve all got a lot of questions these days: In a world marked by division, how do we create bridges of meaningful connection? When despair runs rampant, is real hope possible? When competition is elevated, is compassion still relevant? And at the end of the day, can one person really make any impact at all?

When the world’s problems loom large and your ordinary life stretches you thin, it is still possible to be a difference-maker–one small, intentional, extravagant act of kindness at a time.

Rather than telling you to do more, The Simple Difference shows you how to see more: more of the people in front of you, more of God’s lavish love for you, more of his power within you. The Simple Difference will help you

– stop getting buried in busyness and distraction and discover countless opportunities for impact right where you are
– remove your perceived limitations and learn to see that your “not-enough” is exactly what the world needs
– discard expectations of what it takes to make a difference and delight in the life-changing power of simple kindness

The Simple Difference isn’t about totally changing the course of your life; it’s about letting God change you and work through you in the midst of your ordinary days. To say, As I go on my way, Lord, have your way with me. Be a part of The Simple Difference movement–your life and the world will never be the same.

479 - A Place For Everything
14:41

Coming in for the third round of teaching us all things organization are Kathi and Tonya, the organizational queen who gets things done. Really only 10 percent of organization has to do with the frou frou stuff. The other 90 percent can be split into thirds. In the first episode, Kathi and Tonya walked us through the first 30 percent: decluttering the nonsense so we don’t have to touch it again. The second episode covered the next 30 percent and was all about making decisions in advance and bossing our inner child around. Now, in the finale, they’re talking about how to put those decisions into action and showing us:

• We underestimate the fatigue of many little decisions
• How these decisions end up zapping our energy
• What Mr. Rogers has to do with organization

478 - A Place for Everything
16:21

Kathi is back with her buddy Tonya continuing the conversation on how to get organized for good. Last week they helped us discover that decluttering is the first 30 percent. Today the discussion moves into pre-deciding, the second 30 percent. Only a tiny 10 percent make up the part we typically think of when it comes to organization. Listen in to find out about Part 2 of the important 90 percent and how these three principles will help you actually get organized for good:

  • 10 percent is choosing the systems that work for you
  • 30 percent is decluttering
  • 30 percent is pre-deciding

Wondering about the last 30 percent? Be sure to join in next week to find out in Part 3 of How to Actually Get Organized for Good.

477 - A Place for Everything
14:25

Kathi is talking with Tonya Kubo today, and they’re cracking the case on perhaps the most common topic in Clutter Free Academy: just how in the world do we get more organized? Organization is really about getting ahead and thinking about where things will be when we need them. Kathi simplifies this process by reminding us that everything has a cost of space, time, energy, or money. Then she helps us prioritize the systems and things we really need in this season, teaching us about the first 30% of organization:

  • Don’t let it into the house
  • Kick it back into play
  • Lessen the amount of things we manage

472 - Growing Slow with Jennifer Dukes Lee
21:57

Join Kathi and her friend Jennifer Dukes Lee as they unpack the concept of growing slow. Do you ever feel the desire to un-hurry the pace of your life and your heart? Jennifer finally started asking a different question and learned to do just that by applying a few simple yet meaningful things to everyday life. Listen in to find out how you can grow slow and incorporate these simple things into your life:

  • Setting the tone for your day
  • Enjoying nature
  • Growing and caring for things

We Long to Make a Break from the Fast Pace of Life …

But if we’re honest, we’re afraid of what we’ll miss if we do. Yet when going big and hustling hard leaves us stressed, empty, and out of sorts, perhaps this can be our cue to step into a far more satisfying, sustainable pace. In this crafted, inspiring read, beloved author Jennifer Dukes Lee offers a path to unhurried living by returning to the rhythm of the land and learning the ancient art of Growing Slow. Jennifer was once at breaking point herself, and tells her story of rude awakening to the ways her chosen lifestyle of running hard, scaling fast, and the neverending chase for results was taking a toll on her body, heart, and soul. But when she finally gave herself permission to believe it takes time to grow good things, she found a new kind of freedom. With eloquent truths and vivid storytelling, Jennifer reflects on the lessons she learned from living on her fifth-generation family farm and the insights she gathered from the purposeful yet never rushed life of Christ. Growing Slow charts a path out of the pressures of bigger, harder, faster, and into a more rooted way of living where the growth of good things is deep and lasting.

Following the rhythms of the natural growing season, Growing Slow will help you:

  • Find the true relief that comes when you stop running and start resting in Jesus
  • Learn practices for unhurrying your heart and mind every day
  • Let go of the pressure and embrace the small, good things already bearing fruit in your life
  • And engage slow growth through reflection prompts and simple application steps

465 - Can You be Crafty and Clutter Free at the Same Time?
13:25

Kathi is here with the admittedly not crafty Tonya Kubo talking about all things crafting. You do not need to consider yourself crafty to get something of value from this episode. Crafting, creating, and all hobbies that bring us joy have this in common: a need to keep all the supplies in one area where we can get a little and create something beautiful with it. Together, let’s think about how little we can use to create what we want, grow our supplies as we grow our skills, and ask ourselves these questions to get started on the journey:

  • Do I have a designated spot?
  • How can I change my thinking?
  • How clever can I be with my supplies and space?
  • What do I actually need to craft with joy?

Join Kathi today in a great conversation with Amberly Neese, author of Common Ground, discussing how we can live at peace with other people. Join in the discussion to find out ways that we can clear out this clutter and live at peace with others by:

  • Finding common ground
  • Asking important why questions
  • Fully embracing and loving God, ourselves, and then others

Common Ground: Loving Others Despite Our Differences

Whether it is in politics, the professional world, a party, or a pew, we face conflict every day. As discussions get more heated and social media is deluged with opinion-spewing, hurt feelings, and broken relationships, we need hope and practical tools to navigate the tumultuous waters and live at peace with everyone.

Fortunately, the Scriptures hold the key to living at peace despite our differences. In Common Ground, a four-week Bible study, Amberly Neese combines stories of sibling rivalries from the Bible with personal experience, humor, hope, and her love of God’s Word.

Stories examined from the Old and New Testaments include:

  • Joseph and His Brothers: How to Combat Jealousy

  • Moses, Miriam, and Aaron: How to Work Together Despite Differences

  • Mary, Martha, and Lazarus: How to Appreciate the Contributions of Others

  • Rachel and Leah: Having Compassion for the Plight of Others

These stories point us to peace and reconciliation in all our relationships, reassuring us that it is possible to find common ground with everyone—despite our differences.

453 - How Do I Even Know Where to Start With My Mess
17:34

Another great episode of questions with Kelly and Kathi is here. In this episode, they’re addressing one of the most common questions in clutter free. How do we know where to start with our mess? Decluttering in action is all about making decision after decision. After too many decisions, decision fatigue sets in. We have all tried to put systems around our clutter. Kathi leads us in a better way and teaches us how to start with these four principles:

  • You can’t organize clutter
  • The simpler the system the better
  • Ask yourself where you would look for certain items when you need them
  • Label everything like it belongs in a kindergarten room

Kathi is back with another one of her favorite segments: questions with Kelly and Kathi. This past year has left many of us wondering how to keep our house clean and clutter free with everyone at home. Thankfully, Kathi has some great ideas for doing just that:

  • Establish what an acceptable space is.
  • Don’t face the clutter alone.
  • Teach our kids how to be zero sum kids and care for themselves and their things.
  • The importance of routines and boundaries

Kathi is back for another one of her favorite segments, questions with Kelly and Kathi. This time they’re talking about how to keep our cars clean and clutter free. • Use your gas station stops
  • Kick it back into play

443 - Creating a Kitchen You Will Actually Cook In Part 2
23:15

Kathi and Tonya are back with part two of creating a kitchen you will actually cook in. In part one they discussed the first few principles of creating a kitchen you will want to cook in. They are continuing the conversation this week by helping us limit our decision making so we can get dinner on the table easier and enjoy doing it. Instead of allowing the thoughts and ideas of what we should do direct our decisions, let’s think about what we actually need and how we can:

  • Find and reach everything we need
  • Set up stations in our kitchen
  • Make our kitchen really work for us

433 - Fangirling and the Keys to Creating Consistency in Your Life with Chrystal Evans Hurst
19:09

Today Kathi Lipp is talking with Crystal Evans Hurst, author of The 28 Day Prayer Journey. Sometimes, on this clutter journey, it’s hard to establish the consistency we desire. Thankfully, Kathi and Crystal are here to show us how to create beautiful daily rhythms and routines. Listen in to learn about creating these rhythms and routines and:

  • Why consistency requires us to start small
  • Why, sometimes, we need to give ourselves grace and hit the reset button
  • How we can create daily conversations with God

The 28 Day Prayer Journey: A Daily Guide to Conversations With God

In her new book, The 28-Day Prayer Journey: A Daily Guide to Conversations with God (Zondervan, Aug. 11, 2020), Hurst leads readers on a journey to pray, bit by bit, day by day, to make regular, consistent, fervent prayer become less formidable and more integral to their daily lives.

“The goal of this journey is for you to become addicted to your time with Jesus,” writes Hurst. “There are a lot of things you could be addicted to that will kill your spirit, harm your soul, or cripple your body, but talking to Jesus because you can’t imagine your life without Him—that will only give you life!”

Each day on the 28-day journey, Hurst invites readers to pray, along with three short devotional readings—for the morning, afternoon, and evening—that cover the basic tenets of prayer. Readers are invited to journal their dialogue each day, and to reflect on their progress at the conclusion of each week.

“Prayer is our conduit into relationship with God. Just like any relationship, our relationship with God requires time, intentionality, and consistent deposits of our hearts while listening to His. Don’t let distraction or forgetfulness throw you; just pick up where you left off with Him. He is ready and willing to listen and wants to talk to you, no matter how long it has been.”
