Episode Date
Jordan Buckley (Every Time I Die)
01:56:40

Jordan Buckley has made me laugh more than most anyone I know... I rarely get to hang with the dude these days, but I can still put on ANY Every Time I Die record and just laugh at how hilariously heavy and unrelenting that band was.  I was always envious of his playing, his energy, and his artistic talents aside from guitar.

This is a truly great conversation with Jordan about all things ETID, all this post ETID, all things that pushed and inspired ETID, working with Kurt Ballou, his work with John Taffer, his love of Buthole Surfers, Slayer, and Converge... But, most importantly how the impact of that band's legacy has impacted his life since its demise, how he processed the very public dissolve and what he's done to pick himself back up.

In addition to new music in the works with 3 former ETID dudes, Jordan has launched an insane cameo page that you should check out, and a hub for all of his projects from art to airbnb!

Head over to https://jordanbuckley.xyz/ for all things Jordan.  From Shirts, to original art prints, to Every Time I Die tour posters, and more.  Not a bit of shinfo to be found on that page.

There is much more to this conversation (over an hour of ad-free extras and all the stuff we can't say in public) over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can also hear more unedited interviews with previous guests, patreon exclusives, and beyond!

Filmmaker Riley Stearns (Dual, The Art of Self Defense, Faults)
01:25:07

Riley Stearns is a writer, director, jiu jitsu brown belt, metal-head, gear dork, cold brew addict, and so much more.  His feature debut "Faults" was a nice introduction to what would become one of the most unique voices in film today.  His follow-up, "The Art of Self Defense" is a movie that Ross regularly credits as the film that made him laugh the hardest he has ever laughed in a theater.

Riley has now arrived at his third feature "DUAL", which might be his most signature film to date.  It debuted at Sundance, and will be available in theaters April 15th.  It's the existential black comedy we all need.

Riley joins Ross and Ian to talk about the creative process behind "Dual", honing his unique dialogue, working with folks like Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan, working with Emma Ruth Rundle, building the Full of Hell cinematic universe, and so much more.

If you are a film dork, a music dork, a gear dork, a jiu jitsu dork, or anything of the sorts, there is something in here for you.

Scott Crawford (Salad Days, Creem: America's Only Rock and Roll Magazine)
01:16:36

Long before Scott's instagram handle had me laughing my ass off every day, he put out a documentary called "Salad Days" which took an in-depth look at one of (if not THE) most important music scene's in US history.  We talk in depth about his process and approach to this film, his evolution as a teenage fan to collaborator with heroes like Ian MacKaye, Wayne Kramer, Brian Baker, Henry Rollins, Dave Grohl, and beyond.  How his love of music journalism helped him capture the magic of Creem magazine in his follow-up documentary: "Creem: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine", all the way through his new project that sounds simply incredible.

If you are a fan of Minor Threat, Bad Brains, MC5, and real music then this episode is for you.

Be Sure to follow Scott at his Salad Days page on instagram as well as his new project at @somethingbetterchange_doc

There is a ton more to this conversation.  Everything from his early days in Clutch, to the current state of music journalism, unique interactions with punk-rock icons, and so much more over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can also hear more interviews with previous guests, patreon exclusives, and beyond!

Alex Essoe (Midnight Mass, Dr. Sleep, Starry Eyes, and more)
02:05:36

It's no secret that Ian, Brent, and Ross love horror films...  so it makes sense that we were all thrilled to have star of several incredible horror works, Alex Essoe, on for this episode.  Brent returns for another round of the director's draft with his dear friend and co-host of "Movie Night", Alex Essoe, to talk about the works of Spike Lee, Steven Soderbergh, John Hughes, Taika Waititi, Paul Verhoeven, and more!!

If you are a casual fan or a film obsessive, you will love to hear these homies (whose only qualifications are playing bass, or in this case being in films) chat about all things film in this very special episode of Film Basics with Bassists That Love Film AFTER a good old fashioned interview.

Be sure to follow Alex at @alexessoe on instagram as well as Brent at @darkoperative to keep up with their film curations, some rad music, and much more.

To hear us get hyper-specific about some of Alex's work and beyond, the extended version of this conversation is available at  www.patreon.com/rigsofdad, OR just download the Patreon ap, search for Rigs of Dad, and you can support creators like me and so many more in the process!

Ian dropped some new tunes over at The Interesting Times Gang's Bandcamp that you should click.

Ian's band Strangelight is also about to hit the road in the Pacific Northwest, and Kowloon Walled City will be in the Midwest/Atlantic area next month with Rid of Me, and even Ross's band Burial Waves for a couple dates.

Philip Jamieson (Caspian, Dreamtigers, and The Movie Loft podcast) Returns
01:39:51

Philip Jamieson of Caspian and Dreamtigers RETURNS for one of the nerdiest episodes to date.  We talk about all the nerdy gear that goes into some Caspian riffs, their upcoming vengeance tour, and most fascinatingly: how Caspian goes about sequencing their albums.  Why is that last one so crucial?  Because we are talking in depth about some nerdy comic book characters in film.  Not necessarily the best comic book films, but the best representation of comic book characters in film.

As a bassist, Phil has proven himself to be VERY qualified to talk about film.  But as part of an instrumental band, he doesn't have too much to say about comics...  This means that he is giving Ian and Ross the task of fitting their choices into HIS sequencing demands.   Nerdy enough for you?   All of this makes Phil an incredibly welcome addition to the cast on this episode!  We talk X-men, Batman, Superman, Scott Pilgrim, and so much more.

If you are a casual fan or a film obsessive, you will love to hear these dudes (whose only qualifications are playing bass) chat about all things film in this very special episode of Film Basics with Bassists That Love Film AFTER a good old fashioned interview.

Be sure to keep up with all things Philip via @caspianofficial @dreamtigersmusic and his own film podcast @themovieloftpodcast on instagram and be sure to check out Caspian as they embark on some long-overdue tour dates.

To hear us get hyper-specific about gear, take a deep dive into unlocking some Chase Bliss Audio stuff, go DEEP in Phil's analysis of the new "The Batman" film, and hear what we would LOVE to see Matt Reeves further explore in this franchise, the extended version of this conversation is available at  www.patreon.com/rigsofdad, OR just download the Patreon ap, search for Rigs of Dad, and you can support creators like me and so many more in the process!

"The Batman"
01:36:14

Nat Coghlan returns to discuss the Matt Reeves masterpiece matt'sterpiece, "The Batman", in depth.  What worked? What didn't?  Is Robert Pattinson the best Batman so far?  'Sup with the Riddler?  Was it too dark?  Was there a Bane Juice cameo? Was that another cameo?  Is this the best batman film thus far?  How many strings does this comic adaptation earn?  Three bassists basically cover all the bases in this four-string-banger of an episode.

Be sure to check out Ian and Nat's band Strangelight HERE as they just put out a stellar new EP AND are hitting the road soon in the Pacific Northwest.  So if you like rad, fast, loose punk rock, go put some gas in their tanks!

"Don't Cut Out the Editor" - A Celebration of Film Editing
01:39:23

The Academy has sadly decided to several categories from the Oscar Broadcast, and it's just a bummer.  We've covered the magic of film scores in depth with J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, etc) in a previous episode, and no we are celebrating the art of editing  with a selection of films that we find to be great examples of art in editing.

All of your favorite films, songs, shows, and stories are the result of sold editing.  Sometimes the editing of a film is just as important as the script and the direction.  We talk about how it's used to enhance scope in storytelling, how it's used to amplify the scares in horror, and how it is one of the best comedic devices in comedy.   We discuss the works of Kubrick, Fincher, Nolan, Adam McKay, and more.

If you want to hear the UNEDITED version of this chat, you can hear that and so much more over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon.  This also includes extended interviews with my guests like Kurt Ballou (Converge), Greg Edwards (Failure, Autolux), and much more.  Plus you will hear us talk about some movie news of the week and review films like the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Kimi, and more.

Hear Kowloon Walled City's album "Piecework" here!  And be sure to snag tickets to their upcoming shows!!!

Kurt Ballou (Converge, God City Instruments/Studio, and more)
01:28:47

Kurt Ballou is a name with a resume as heavy as his tones.  When he is not ripping riffs for Converge, or working the board at God City Studio, he is building pedals and guitars for God City Instruments.  The dude does it all and does it incredibly well.  Thrilled to talk to him about all things Converge, the process behind Blood Moon, recording techniques, guitar builds, effects, and some new technology that he has birthed into the music world.  Gear dorks, wear a hard hat while listening to this one...  Dude is dropping some heavy knowledge.

Brian Cook (Russian Circles, Sumac, These Arms Are Snakes, Botch, Torment & Glory, and more)
01:33:56

Brian Cook was the first ever guest on this podcast, and he is back with a vengeance...  Some of that is true.  But regardless of his thirst for revenge, Brian has had an insane two years since we last spoke.  Since then he has released a solo album which you should listen to here, These Arms Are Snakes had a reunion, Russian Circles recorded a new album, they toured with Korn and System of a Down, they had all their gear stolen, and so much more...

This is not the traditional Rigs of Dad long-form interview either... This is a glimpse into all the tangents and derailed conversations that always happen with every guest during the Lightning Crashes Lightning Round.  There was simply too much stuff to cut out, so I let a lot of that role for the release.  If you want to hear the whole thing, head over to the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can hear that and all other extended interviews and beyond.

Be sure to listen to listen to any and all of Brian's music wherever you get your tunes.

Russian Circles can be heard here.

Sumac can be heard here.

And you'll just have to listen to the episode to find out where you can hear These Arms and Botch next!!

Cult Leader is one of the most terrifying bands out there right now.  A wide array of sounds from abrasive to beautifully haunting that is almost impossible to pull off, yet they do it and make it seem effortless in the process.  Guitarist Michael Mason talks about the process behind some of these sounds, his evolution as a musician from Gaza to now, and even gives an incredibly interesting inside look at his guitar building process...  Some of the most unique and gorgeous builds from one of the most unique and crushing players.

"A Lot With A Little" - Scene Stealers & more w/ Kevin Hilliard (Burial Waves, Caverns, etc)
01:11:49

Kevin Hilliard: a man that is best described by Ian as "Kevin seems super smart... like too smart to be slumming it with us".  But that might be what makes him the perfect fit for this episode: as study of actors and actresses that completely steal a movie with very little screen time.

We take a look at some John Hughes classics, some iconic Coen Brothers moments, and hopefully some films you are not as familiar with!

You can hear Kevin crushing the low end frequency spectrum on the new Burial Waves release "Holy Ground" which is available wherever you listen to music.  Soak it up at their bandcamp page  via Dark Operative.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast - Brian Baker (Bad Religion, Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, and more)
01:29:02

The greatest living punk-rock guitarist: Brian Baker.

His impact on punk music and in rock is undeniable.  Whether you know him from hardcore legends Minor Threat, punk icons Bad Religion, or some non-super-group super-groups like Fake Names, Foxhall Stacks, or Beach Rats you have no doubt feasted on at least one of the Baker's dozen or so bands.

We take some deep dives into gear on this one... We talk the magic of Gibsons, Marshalls, P90 pickups, and more.  How the gear has influenced the player, how the player has influenced the gear, and how these have changed over time on stage and in studio, but why it's important for Brian to keep the rig simple.

It was an honor to have this conversation and an absolute joy to share it.

Keep up with all things Brian Baker online at @brianbakers @badreligionband @beachratsnj and @dag.nasty

Be sure to check out the new Fake Names ep here which also features Baker, Johnny Temple (Girls Against Boys), Michael Hampton (S.O.A., Embrace), and Dennis Lyxzén (The Refused, International Noise Conspiracy).

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast - Joby Ford (The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, and more)
01:17:29

Multi-instrumentalist Joby Ford took a break from the camping life to talk tone with Ross.  You might know Joby as one of the founding members and guitarists of The Bronx, maybe for his guitar or vihuela or jarana or accordion work in Mariachi El Bronx, maybe for his surf guitar sounds in Pounded By the Surf, and beyond....  Regardless, was stoked to get him out of the tubing tides of Tennessee to take a dip in some soundwaves for this enlightening chat.

The Bronx is currently on tour with Rancid and Dropkick Murphys to celebrate the release of their sixth album: the aptly titled "Bronx VI" and it is an absolute banger of an album.

In this episode, we talk tone, amps, strings, pickups, effects, moshing, skateboarding, being a dad, and beyond...  This episode is also graced by the additional music of one of Joby's other bands: Pounded By the Surf.

Keep up with all things The Bronx at www.thebronxxx.com

59:46

Nat Coghlan is Ian's bandmate in Strangelight, co-host on the Miscarriage of Justice Podcast, about the Snyder Cut Justice League, and an all around hilarious dude...  Beyond that he has played bass in a band before, and that makes him MORE than qualified to talk movies on Film Basics with Bassists That Love Film.

This week we take a look at the quintessential action/adventure films out there...  Many left turns on this journey make this more than an alright conversation.

Rigs of Dad Presents - Film Basics w/ guest Josh Newton (Shiner & Every Time I Die)
01:28:28

Josh Newton is most known as a six-sting slinger in the band Shiner, one of the longest tenured bassists of Every Time I Die, and one of the most avid fans of horror films out there.

This is Josh's second time on the podcast, as we felt it was only fair that he be given a chance to shine some light on the shade thrown his way by Andy Williams last week.  While we were at it, we decided to do another film draft, focusing on horror films.

Slashers, demons, vampires, zombies, Craven, Carpenter, Leatherface, and more... We talk about the essentials in horror cinema, what makes these movies so special, and so much more.

If you are a casual fan or a film obsessive, you will love to hear three dudes (whose only qualifications are playing bass) chat about all things horror in this very special episode of Film Basics with Bassists That Love Film.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast Ep 52 - "The Puke Story"
31:20

Wow!  52 episodes!   A full years worth of tone talk!!  I am flashing it back to where it all began on this one.  Here is the very first ever attempt at a Rigs of Dad themed podcast.  This is one of the most insane stories I have ever heard told in a way that was simply too ambitious for me to keep up with...  It's like "This American Life" meets "This is Spinal Tap" and it is told through the eyes of several previous guests from Frodus, Majority Rule, El Huervo, The Outcircuit, and beyond.  It has everything you want in it: tour stories, pranks, The Refused, Sky Mall, and beyond!!!

Endless thanks to everyone that made this past year possible.  Thank you first time listeners, long time listeners, and all the patrons and guests that have made this possible.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 51: Jonathan Nuñez (Torche, Nuñez Amps, Sound Artillery Studios)
01:24:16

The sonic sequel to last week's episode!!

After speaking with Steve from Torche, I was eager to get really nerdy with Jonathan about the sound sorcery he brings to the band.

From their blistering gain, dropped tuning, and undeniably rich air-moving sound, Torche is one of the most unique and impressive forces in music today.  There is no band that fits every possible mood as much as Torche.  There is no band that pushes the boundaries of sound harder than Torche.  And there is no guy I would probably rather talk amps and tones with more than Jonathan.

We talk about his gear, his history with gear, his studio, and how he became so learned in all things heavy music.

Please be sure to check out Torche wherever you listen to music, and follow them wherever you consume your social media.  PLEASE check out Nuñez Amps at www.nunezamps.com and be sure to follow both on Instagram.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 50: Steve Brooks (Torche, Floor)
01:12:32

Steve Brooks is helping me celebrate the 50th episode with his own birthday!!

Torche is a band that is in constant rotation in my house, in the car, at the gym... everywhere.  There is no band that fits every possible mood as much as Torche.  They are one of the heaviest bands, one of the happiest bands, one of the catchiest bands, one of the hardest working bands... they are just a band for everyone.

Thrilled to have had the opportunity to talk tone with one of the most important figures in that world since the word itself was ever applied.  We talk gear, tour, influences, volume, and much more.

Please be sure to check out Torche wherever you listen to music, and follow them wherever you consume your social media.

If you want to hear more of this conversation, the extended version is available to patrons on all tiers at the Rigs of Dad Patreon page. 01:15:09

Multi-instrumentalist Allen Epley talks tone, writing, recording, podcasting, getting baked, and much much more.

His band Shiner put out a monster of an album last year after a 20 year hiatus.  His band The Life and Times has put out several monster albums in between that time.  He has put out an incredible podcast called Third Gear Scratch that has deep talks with some of the best working class entertainers out there.  And all that is apparently just the tip of the iceberg with Al.

You can follow all of Al's doings on instagram at @alienepley @scratchthirdgear@shinerkc and @thelifeandtimesmusic and be sure to check out his website wwww.allenepley.com for more.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 47: Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, Nine Inch Nails, and more)
01:13:32

Whether it's because of his work on bass or behind the board, you have probably heard many works of Justin Meldal-Johnsen.  He worked with Beck for many many years.  He has worked with Nine Inch Nails.  He has produced albums for bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Paramore, and M83...  he has done it all, seen it all, and I am fortunate enough to have had him discuss it all in this episode.

JMJ is one of the entry way musicians for me as a bassist into gear-nerdom...  We talk gear, pedals, writing, and how all of that history goes into his work as a producer.  Whether you're a seasoned musician, a dabbler, a gear dork, or just a fan of music, this conversation is for you!

You can of course follow him on instagram and such at @justinmeldaljohnsen and check out his website www.justinmj.com for more

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 46: Harris Paseltiner (Darlingside)
01:12:27

Breaking out of the normal cycle of punk, hardcore, and metal guests on this one to get folk'd up with Harris Paseltiner of Darlingside.  He's a vocalist, a cellist, a guitarist, a gear dork, a home-engineer dork, and much more.

Darlingside has always blown me away with their arrangements (particularly with "God of Loss"), and their new album "Fish Pond Fish" is no exception.  Check them out where you hear music, and be sure to scope www.darlingside.com for more updates.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 44: Stephen Brodsky (Cave In, Mutoid Man, Old Man Gloom, and more)
01:12:37

Stephen Brodsky is most known for his work in Cave In, Mutoid Man, Two Minutes to Late Night, and almost every other musical project that I have been listening to for more the last two decades.  Excellent look into the mind of the madman behind the riffs, tones, effects, vocals, and more.  We talked about the evolution of Cave In's sound, the writing process for his many projects, what makes the business side of the "Music Business" tolerable, and much more.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 43: Dave Turncrantz (Russian Circles)
01:13:34

Dave Turncrantz is an incredibly talented and tasteful drummer that has arguably found himself in one of the most difficult positions in one of the best bands out there.  In Russian Circles he operates free of a click, but at the mercy of the layers and loops bing built around him.  How he pulls this off is something that has always bewildered me...  Fortunately I was able to discuss in detail over many many laughs.

We talk drums, tour nightmares, being an ambassador for Ludwig Drums, finding the right studio, picking the right producers for an album, and much much more.

If you want to hear more, the extended version of this conversation is available to patrons on all tiers. A crucial deep dive for all you drum dorks out there.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 42: Evan Weiss (Into It. Over It., Pet Symmetry, Their/They're/There, and more)
01:18:44

Evan Weiss is the busiest man in music.  That's just fact.

The dude plays in more bands than bands that exist.  Beyond that I think he is a bit of a song savant compounded with a total gear nerd...  all recipe for a fantastic conversation about music, movies, the difference between a recording artist and a performing artist, and much much more.

We talk about his writing experiences with his band Into It. Over It.  We talk about his role his other projects like Pet Symmetry, Their/They're/Their, running a label and studio off of patreon, and much much more.  Truly inspiring conversation with a guy that will make you believe in the power of art!

Be sure to check out Into it. Over it.'s latest album "Figure" wherever you listen to music. Dive into a collection of Pet Symmetry jams on their "Runaway Looks" retrospective release, and all the fantastic stuff Evan and his friends are putting out via The Storm Chasers LTD family.

I implore you to check out Evan's Patreon page for Into It. Over It. and The Storm Chasers LTD at https://www.patreon.com/intoitoverit and of course support his bands and so many others over at www.bandcamp.com

You have heard me gush about this band forever!  Now you get to hear them gush! A full band interview with the incredible LAPÊCHE.

A truly phenomenal band that seems to be cranking out good music for good causes during these crazy times.  We talk about their new approach to songwriting, working with J. Robbins, touring with Jawbox, we get nerdy about gear, and of course discuss one of our favorite bands ever through a game of Dad-Libs!!

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 40: Phil Towle (the therapist from "Some Kind of Monster")
01:20:04

Phil Towle is probably best known for his work that was documented in the Metallica documentary, "Some Kind of Monster"; but honestly, he should be known as the shining light we all look for on the darkest of days.  A truly disarming, personable, and insightful guy with tons of great advice for bands at all levels.

Kirk Hammet of Metallica said "If Lennon and McCartney had Phil, the Beatles would never have broken up." I think any band could be inserted in that sentence...  We talk a great deal about "Some Kind of Monster", the reception of St. Anger, addiction, hardship that often runs with art, the price of fame, and more.  Fantastic conversation with a truly fantastic dude.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 39 - Johnny Dang (O'Brother, Hisself)
01:18:42

Johnny Dang is one of my favorite musicians out there.  He may be most known as one of the three guitarists for O'Brother (who put out a truly fantastic album in 2020) but is quickly becoming a well respected composer after the debutrelease of his solo project Hisself called "in the end".

We talked all things tone, songwriting, Sigur Ros, Johann Johannsson, Jazzmasters, and more in this one.  Truly a dude that deserves a ton of attention!

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 35: Jean-Paul Gaster (Clutch)
01:16:29

If you're a drummer, you will love this talk... If you're not a drummer, you will love this talk.  Jean-Paul Gaster is a true madman behind the kit, and his resume speaks for itself.

Jean-Paul is one of (if not the) greatest drummers of our time, and his band Clutch is creeping up on 30 years of unapologetic, pure rock fury.  I had a blast talking with Jean-Paul about his early days behind the kit, his constant thirst for a deeper knowledge of the instrument, how drums have changed the course of world history, and much much more.  Lots covered over a couple beers with this dude, and I am thrilled to share it with you.

Be sure to check out clutchmerch.com for tickets to their last stream of the year, which takes place this coming Friday!

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 34: Clay Tarver (Chavez, Silicon Valley, & More)
01:03:48

Very excited about this episode. Clay Tarver has an incredibly impressive resume across several mediums...  You might know him for his innovative and angular guitar playing for bands like Chavez or Bullet Lavolta.  You might know him for his work on films like "Joyride".  Or maybe you know his work on hit shows like HBO's "Silicon Valley".  I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to pick his brain on all of those!

The collaborative and creative process is a common theme in so many of these episodes, and this conversation dives right into an exploration of those across several mediums with a guy that has put out and produced some of the most engaging music, tv, and film over the years.

Chavez is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of their seminal debut "Gone Glimmering", which is available via www.matadorrecords.com

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 32: David Knudson (Minus the Bear, Botch)
01:04:44

Is a musical mad-scientist.  Whether it's with devastatingly heavy riffs in the seminal hardcore band Botch or the mind-blowing loops and tap dancing of Minus the Bear, David Knudson is a Fret-Force to reckon with.

We talk gear, riffs, what influenced him, what made him such an influential player, and his upcoming solo project which sounds awesome!

FWIW, I love talking about bandcamp and supporting artists through that wonderful platform...  AND right now, you can check out Botch's entire catalogue at www.botch.bandcamp.com hear David's fury in its full glory on the only platform that seems to be truly helping artists stream their music these days.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 29: Lars Frederiksen (Rancid, Old Firm Casuals, Lars & the Bastards, and more)
01:32:49

If you told me 25 years ago that I would one day be talking to Lars Frederiksen for three hours about everything from gear, to family, to yeast infections, to following Ace Frehley into a bathroom....  I would have called you crazy.  But here I am, sharing that very conversation....  Well, most of it.

Lars is an insanely personable, disarming, genuine, and honest dude with a lot of truly fascinating stuff to share, endless stories, and more.  The man needs little to no introduction, so I suggest just diving in.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 27: Ryan Ratajski (Fuzzrocious Pedals)
01:13:28

Ryan Ratajski is a family man, running a family business, building a family of fuzz pushers around the globe.  He has been a tonal titan in the pedal industry for almost a decade now, and there is a good chance that his work is featured in the music of some of your favorite bands.

This is NOT a nerded out deep dive into pedals...  while there is some of that in here, this is a conversation with a solid dude about running a business, working with your heroes, and making a living off of something you're passionate about.

Fuzzrocious is relaunching their 420 Fuzz this week, and it is nothing short of magical.  Please be sure to check out Ryan's work and make your sound better TODAY

Nick Reinhart is a musical madman.  A true innovator and outlier when it comes to playing the guitar.  If you are not familiar with his bands, I can assure you that you are familiar with his work in the pedal world.  Nick is almost like the second generation of Tom Morello Mused players...  This is a very insightful and fun conversation with a rare genius.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 25: Ian Miller (Kowloon Walled City, Less Art, & much more)
01:16:58

I'm gonna be real:  The character limit on here won't let me even put a dent in Ian's resume...  This dude is a true gear dork, an insanely influential bassist, and a dude that has done it all and will continue to do more.

Most of you might know Ian from his work in the bands Kowloon Walled City, Less Art, Puig Destroyer, No Lights, Strangelight, and on and on and on...  We touch on alot of that, but really focus on his evolution as a player from Maiden enthusiast, to youtube-playthrough guru over at The Low Country.

A man that needs little introduction here: The legendary Jim Adkins of the legendary Jimmy Eat World.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 22: Scott Seiver (Tenacious D, John Carptenter, Penix, & more)
01:06:06

You'd think a man like Scott would be in jail for assault given his propensity to beat Toms.  But he is instead enlisted to pummel the life pulse into such incredible acts like Tenacious D, John Carpenter, and much more on a regular basis.

Was thrilled to have Scott crack me up doing this intense psycho-analysis project known as Dad-Libs.

Be sure to check out Scott's latest release Penix wherever you listen to music, and be sure to keep and eye out for his score work in "The Great North" on Fox.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 21: Steve Pedulla (Thursday)
57:56

Steve Pedulla is the Roger Deakins of gear, and Roger Deakins is the Steve Pedulla of cameras...  At least that is what you will be telling yourself after this episode, as that's what I told myself after listening back to it.

Steve is most known for his guitar work in the iconic rock band Thursday, but he has also put out a ton of work from behind the camera on several shows & movies... and much to my surprise, he had put in some time in front of the camera, appearing in some of Danny McBride and David Gordon Green's earliest efforts.  We talk about his history in both mediums, the ups and downs of the collaborative process in both, hilarious tour stories, and LOTS of gear-talk.

Truly funny conversation with a truly sweet and funny dude.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 19: Dad-Libs w/ Grant Dekernion
52:31

Taking a break from the normal long-form interview in this episode and playing a game of Dad-Libs with my friend Grant.

The rules are simple:  I take a bands wikipedia page, remove the key-players, album titles, band names, Grant blindly fills in the blanks, I read it back with his additions, and he has to guess the band.

This was a fun experiment...

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 18: Shawna Potter (War on Women)
01:02:07

Shawna Potter is a true force on stage as the singer for War On Women, and an awesome friend to chat it up over drinks while off stage!  She's an accomplished singer, guitarist, writer, speaker, dog-whisperer, amp servicer, and much more!

We talk about what it's like to be an accomplished artist that is not endorsed by Shure, her new book about making spaces safer (which she wrote without any help from Shure), going from a guitarist/singer to one of the most animated presences on stage without a guitar (or a Shure endorsement), and why she hates the generalization of "punk" in music.  All of this and more brought to you without Shure!

If you would like to hear an extended and unedited version of this conversation, with over an hour of extra banter and beyond, check out the Rigs of Dad Patreon page at www.patreon.com/rigsofdad or just download the ap and get it right to your phone!

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 17: Pete Moffett (Burning Airlines, WOOL, & more)
01:05:09

Pete Moffett is one of the hardest working and most legendary drummers on stage, sidestage, backstage, and off stage.

It was great talking to him about his days in hardcore bands, seeing riots while on tour with Rage Against the Machine and House of Pain, playing drums for the unfathomably amazing Burning Airlines, teching for some of the largest names in music, Nic Cage, horror movies, and much more.

Great conversation with a truly funny and awesome dude.

Pete is currently playing with Foxhall Stacks (a supergroup of DC punk legends), who just put out an EP called "The Half Stack" ep.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 15: Matt Armstong (Frank Iero & the Future Violents, Murder By Death)
01:02:58

As a cycling enthusiast, I was thrilled to learn that I had landed an interview with Lance Armstrong...  When that ended up not being the case, I was relieved that this dude Matt Armstrong is not only a hilarious dude, but a truly innovative and gear savvy bassist.

Fun conversation with not-Lance-Armstrong about everything from unconventional bass playing, gear, filling out the frequencies in a band, working the door at a strip club and more.

One of the funniest lightning rounds thus far!

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast Ep 14: Mike Sullivan (Russian Circles)
01:05:03

He won't say anything on stage or on an album; but when he opens his mouth, Mike Sullivan is one of the funniest dudes around.

If you are not familiar with the name Jamie Stillman, you have certainly heard his work.  Jamie is the founder of EarthQuaker Devices and he is responsible for keeping guitarists and bassists on their toes while on stage and in the studio for several years.

If you think this is a gear-only episode, brace yourself... there is so much more here.  Jamie has a storied past as a drummer, guitarist, bassist, label head, tour manager, and much much more.  Tons of funny stories in this one and a really fun conversation overall.

If you want to hear the nitty gritty on gear, amps, axes, and all the stuff we probably shouldn't say in public, check out the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page for extended and unedited interviews with Jamie and all my other guests.

Very few mortals have accomplished as much as J. Robbins.  Dude is legendary on stage, behind the board, over beers, and beyond.

Thrilled to have J. on to talk about everything from Jawbox reuniting, the magic of films scores, gear, and how his producer's ear has evolved over the years.  Lots of fun stuff in here for musicians, guitarists, fans, and engineers.

Lot's of craziness and deep dives in the extended conversation available at www.patreon.com/rigsofdad

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 10: Alex Auxier (Orange Amps)
58:55

We all know that tone comes from the heart, but it takes an amp to get the blood pumping and the tone thumping...  That is where Alex Auxier steps in.

As Artist Relations for Orange Amps, Alex is the dude who makes sure the backline is the best it can be, where it can be, and that Orange Artists are always able to hone their tone with ease.

We talk gear, landing a "white whale" account, why Yanni's music is magic, and much more.  Fun conversation with a truly funny dude.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 8: Caspian
01:26:11

Caspian is not your typical Post-Rock band, but they always seem to be the first one that comes to mind when I hear the term.  They recently released a monument of an album called "On Circles" which is available wherever you may listen to music.

I was joined by longtime homies Philip and Jani to talk about their new album, the follow-up documentary, their gear, their writing process, their influences, Philip's deep disdain for Jim Henson, and much much more.

There's over 90 minutes of additional goofing off and such available via the Rigs of Dad Patreon page (patreon.com/rigsofdad), and all new funds from new patrons this month will be donated to Black Lives matter as well as the the Brooklyn Bail Fund

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 7: Anton Dang (O'Brother)
59:05

RE-UPLOADED!  Apparently there was an audio issue with the first bounce.
Anton has been wiping venue floors with people's jaws for a decade now leaving many hard of hearing as well as speechless in the process.  His band O'Brother just released their fourth full-length, "You and I"...  to no surprise, it is amazing.

We talk writing, finding their sound, honing his tone, and much much more.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 6 - Josh Newton (Shiner, Every Time I Die, & more)
01:02:51

I have been looking forward to this episode for a long time.  A while back, Josh sent me some mixes of what was possibly a Shiner album, with no real release details or anything, so I could not ask to have him on here to talk about it...

Well, now the album is out, and it is nothing short of phenomenal.  We talked about the writing process for this record, his evolution as a guitarist, got nerdy over some gear, talked horror movies, and much much more.

There is over an hour of additional conversation from this interview (as well as all previous interviews) over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon page - patreon.com/rigsofdad
