Elder Kofford Quote: “In contrast to the bombastic and cynical arguments of opposing counsel, your advocate began your defense as a trickle and built to the force of a mighty river. Humbly, softly, meaningfully, and compellingly, he pled your case. I knew the impact he was having when I saw tears streaming down the cheeks of many in the courtroom. I don’t remember all of his arguments and logic, but I do remember him saying that man is a little lower than the angels (see  Ps. 8:5) and that the worth of souls is great (see D&C 18:10) In one of the most majestic moments, his eyes filled with compassion and his voice quivering with indignation, he admonished, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone.”  (John 8:7) [1991–O:27, Cree-L Kofford, The Ultimate Inheritance—An Allegory]

Elder Soares Quote: “I testify to you that following our Master’s footsteps and waiting on Him who is the ultimate healer of our lives will provide rest to our souls and make our burdens easy and light.” [2019–O:113, Ulisses Soares, Take Up Our Cross]

Join hosts Ganel-Lyn Condie and John Fossum as they discuss impactful topics from this week’s Come, Follow Me lesson covering the book of Job.  Explore these important themes, topics, and questions:

  • Is the “Why does God let bad things happen to good people” question less useful than we might think? Is there a way to reframe the question in a more helpful way?
  • Have I ever “charged God foolishly”? What does that mean?
  • What does it mean to trust God more than yourself?
  • What does it mean to think of the Lord as a “compensatory God”?

Elder Uchtdorf Quote: “Being grateful in times of distress does not mean that we are pleased with our circumstances. It does mean that through the eyes of faith we look beyond our present-day challenges. This is not a gratitude of the lips but of the soul. It is a gratitude that heals the heart and expands the mind.” [2014–A:70, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Grateful in Any Circumstances]

Elder Scott Quote: “When you face adversity, you can be led to ask many questions. Some serve a useful purpose; others do not. To ask, Why does this have to happen to me? Why do I have to suffer this, now? What have I done to cause this? will lead you into blind alleys. It really does no good to ask questions that reflect opposition to the will of God. Rather ask, What am I to do? What am I to learn from this experience? What am I to change? Whom am I to help? How can I remember my many blessings in times of trial? Willing sacrifice of deeply held personal desires in favor of the will of God is very hard to do. Yet, when you pray with real conviction, “Please let me know Thy will” and “May Thy will be done,” you are in the strongest position to receive the maximum help from your loving Father. This life is an experience in profound trust—trust in Jesus Christ, trust in His teachings, trust in our capacity as led by the Holy Spirit to obey those teachings for happiness now and for a purposeful, supremely happy eternal existence. To trust means to obey willingly without knowing the end from the beginning (see Prov. 3:5–7). To produce fruit, your trust in the Lord must be more powerful and enduring than your confidence in your own personal feelings and experience.” Richard G. Scott (Trust in the Lord- October 1995)

Sister Barbara B. Smith Quote: “Each woman in today’s world has responsibilities akin to those which Esther faced. The circumstances of each life are significantly different, yet each woman faces the challenge of being true to the principles of the gospel if she would improve the quality of her mortal life and make herself worthy of the opportunity of eternal progression. She should begin by understanding who she is and that she has magnificent potential as a daughter of God. Her goal then should be lofty. The scriptures say: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect”  Matt. 5:48 Quickly I caution that this is not an obtainable goal in one step or one day or one year. It takes a lifetime of conscious effort, of striving and learning and living, to become an holy woman.” [1979–O:107, Barbara B. Smith, Women for the Latter Day]

Sister Camille N. Johnson Quote: “Esther is another beautiful example of letting God prevail. Rather than sticking with a cautious narrative of self-preservation [implying that her initial actions to become queen were done under this pretense?], she exercised faith, turning herself completely over to the Lord. Haman was plotting the destruction of all the Jews in Persia. Mordecai, Esther’s relative, became aware of the plot and wrote to her, urging her to talk with the king on behalf of her people. She recounted to him that one who approaches the king without being summoned was subject to death. But in a tremendous act of faith, she asked Mordecai to gather the Jews and fast for her. “I also and my maidens will fast likewise,” she said, “and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.” [2021–O:80, Camille N. Johnson, Invite Christ to Author Your Story]

President Nelson Quote: “The doctrine of fasting is ancient. It has been practiced by biblical heroes from the earliest days. Moses, David, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Isaiah, Daniel, Joel, and many others fasted and preached of fasting.” [2020–A:72, Russell M. Nelson, Opening the Heavens for Help]

Elder Dale Renlund said, “When we get off the path, God is saddened because He knows that this eventually, but invariably, leads to diminished happiness and forfeited blessings. In the scriptures, getting off the path is referred to as sin, and the resultant decrease in happiness and forfeited blessings is called punishment. In this sense, God is not punishing us; punishment is a consequence of our own choices, not His.” (“Choose You This Day,” General Conference, October 2018)

Elder Watkins Quote: Elder Watkins prayed, “for the surrounding community that they will see and know that this temple is a blessing to them.” Elder Watkins asked for a blessing, stating that “ancestors of those who are not . . . members . . . in this area will have an increased influence upon their families here on earth.”  “As the temple foundation is poured, and the walls are placed, and the roof is formed, let us all revitalize our foundational faith in apostles and prophets with Jesus Christ being our chief cornerstone,” prayed Elder Watkins.

Elder Uchtdorf Quote: “As the work continued, Nehemiah’s enemies became more desperate. Four times they entreated him to leave the safety of the city and meet with them under the pretense of resolving the conflict, but Nehemiah knew that their intent was to do him harm. Each time they approached him, he responded with the same answer: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down.” What a remarkable response! With that clear and unchanging purpose of heart and mind, with that great resolve, the walls of Jerusalem rose until they were rebuilt in an astonishing 52 days. (see v. 15) Nehemiah refused to allow distractions to prevent him from doing what the Lord wanted him to do.” [2009–A:59, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, We Are Doing a Great Work and Cannot Come Down]

President Spencer W. Kimball said: “I am convinced that each of us, at some time in our lives, must discover the scriptures for ourselves—and not just discover them once, but rediscover them again and again. …

“I feel strongly that we must all of us return to the scriptures just as King Josiah did and let them work mightily within us, impelling us to an unwavering determination to serve the Lord. … I find that when I get casual in my relationships with divinity and when it seems that no divine ear is listening and no divine voice is speaking, that I am far, far away. If I immerse myself in the scriptures the distance narrows and the spirituality returns. I find myself loving more intensely those whom I must love with all my heart and mind and strength, and loving them more, I find it easier to abide their counsel” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Spencer W. Kimball [2006],

Elder Dale Renlund quote: “Our Good Shepherd is unchanging and feels the same way today about sin and sinners as He did when He walked the earth. He does not recoil from us because we sin, even if He on occasion must think, “But what a sheep!” He loves us so much that He provided the way for us to repent and become clean.” (“Our Good Shepherd,” General Conference, April 2017)

Elder Ronald A. Rasband quote: “We may or may not have chariots of fire sent to dispel our fears and conquer our demons, but the lesson is clear. The Lord is with us, mindful of us and blessing us in ways only He can do. Prayer can call down the strength and the revelation that we need to center our thoughts on Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice. The Lord knew that at times we would feel fear. I have been there and so have you. … In this Church, we may be few in number by the way the world counts influence, but when we open our spiritual eyes, ‘they that be with us are more than they that be with them’ [2 Kings 6:16]” (“Be Not Troubled,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2018, 18–19).

Joseph Smith story reference: In mid-June 1834, Zion’s Camp was encamped on a fork of the Fishing River in Missouri. Five armed Missourians rode into camp and swore that the members of Zion’s Camp would “see hell before morning” (in History of the Church, 2:103). They said that a mob of more than 300 men had combined from different counties and were preparing to cross the Missouri River to destroy them. Some of the men in Zion’s Camp wanted to fight, but the Prophet promised that the Lord would protect them. The Prophet declared, “Stand still and see the salvation of God” (quoted from Joseph Holbrook, “History of Joseph Holbrook, 1806–1885,” 15, in Church History in the Fulness of Times, 148.) A few minutes after the Missourians left, a small black cloud appeared in the sky. It moved eastward, unrolling like a scroll, filling the heavens with darkness. An intense storm of rain, hail, wind, thunder, and lightning struck. Zion’s Camp abandoned their tents and found...

C.S. Lewis Quote: “Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.” ― C.S. Lewis, Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer

Elder Gong Quote: “A young boy in South America raises chickens and sells their eggs to help buy windows for the house his family is building. He pays his tithing first. He will literally see the windows of heaven open.”

President Nelson Quote #1: In Samoa, Fiji, and Tahiti, just as the meetings began, the rain stopped. But in Tonga, the rain did not stop. Yet 13,000 faithful Saints came hours early to get a seat, waited patiently through a steady downpour, and then sat through a very wet two-hour meeting. We saw vibrant faith at work among each of those islanders—faith sufficient to stop the rain and faith to persevere when the rain did not stop. ( April 2021, “Christ is Risen; Faith in Him Will Move Mountains”)

President Nelson Quote #2:  We live in a time prophesied long ago, when “all things shall be in commotion; and surely, men’s hearts shall fail them; for fear shall come upon all people.” That was true before the pandemic, and it will be true after. Commotion in the world will continue to increase. In contrast, the voice of the Lord is not “a voice of a great tumultuous noise, but … it [is] a still voice of perfect mildness, [like] a whisper, and it [pierces] even to the very soul.” (April 2021 conference)

Albert Einstein Quote: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

Brigham Young Quote: “The Lord steadies the ark; and if it does jostle, and appear to need steadying, if the way is a little sideling sometimes, and to all appearance threatens its overthrow, be careful how you stretch forth your hands to steady it; let us not be too officious in meddling with that which does not concern us; let it alone, it is the Lord's work. I know enough to let the kingdom alone, and do my duty. It carries me, I do not carry the kingdom.” [BY JD 11:249, Brigham Young, God’s Kingdom on Earth]

Elder Dale Renlund Quote: “Heavenly Father’s prescribed path leads to the best eternal outcomes. We are free to choose, but we cannot choose the consequences of not following the revealed path. … We cannot deviate from Heavenly Father’s course and then blame Him for inferior outcomes. … When we sincerely repent, no spiritual scar remains, no matter what we have done, how serious it was, or how many times we repeated it. As often as we repent and seek forgiveness with real intent, we can be forgiven.” (“Your Divine Nature and Eternal Destiny,” April 2022)

Elder Mathias Held Quote: “The Lord [is] patiently preparing us, He [is] molding us, and He [is] helping us to discover that we should learn to discern the truth not only through our rational minds but also through the very still and small voice of the Spirit, which speaks especially to our hearts.” (“Seeking Knowledge by the Spirit,” General Conference, April 2019)

Marvin J. Brigham Young Quotes: “It is Baal against Christ now, as it always was.” (Brigham Young, JD, 14:119, May 21, 1871)
“Christ and Baal never can be friends. One or the other must reign triumphantly on the earth, and I say that Jesus Christ shall reign, and I will help him.” (Brigham Young, JD, 8:319, Feb. 10, 1861)

Elder Holland Quote: “Struggle and strife, heartbreak and loss, are not experiences that come only somewhere else to someone else. It means that moments in which faith feels frightfully difficult to hold on to are not reserved for our bygone days of persecution and martyrdom. No, the times when becoming a saint through Christ the Lord seems almost—almost—too much to achieve are still with us. … We will be asked to submit, to obey, and to be childlike. For some of us that is difficult now, and it will be difficult then. … [But] heaven’s grace exceeds our merit.”
(“A Saint Through the Atonement of Christ the Lord,” BYU Devotional, January 18, 2022)

Sister Ann M. Dibb Quote: “Samson was born with great potential. His mother was promised, ‘He shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines’ [Judges 13:5]. But as Samson grew, he looked more to the world’s temptations than to God’s direction. He made choices because they ‘pleaseth [him] well’ [Judges 14:3] rather than because those choices were right. Repeatedly, the scriptures use the phrase ‘and he went down’ [Judges 14:7] as they tell of Samson’s journeys, actions, and choices. Instead of arising and shining forth to fulfill his great potential, Samson was overcome by the world, lost his God-given power, and died a tragic, early death” (“Arise and Shine Forth,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2012, 118).

Gospel Library Quote about Joshua: “This book is named after Joshua because he was the principal figure in it and not because he was the author.
Old Testament prophet and leader, and the successor of Moses. He was born in Egypt before the children of Israel escaped (Num. 14:26–31). He and Caleb were among the twelve spies sent to Canaan. They alone gave a good report of the land (Num. 13:8, 16–33; 14:1–10). He died at the age of 110 (Josh. 24:29). Joshua was a great example of a devout prophet-warrior.” (Gospel Library, Guide to the Scriptures, “Joshua”)

President Uchtdorf Quote: “We are, therefore, not ignorant of the challenges of the world, nor are we unaware of the difficulties of our times. But this does not mean that we should burden ourselves or others with constant fear. Rather than dwelling on the immensity of our challenges, would it not be better to focus on the infinite greatness, goodness, and absolute power of our God, trusting Him and preparing with a joyful heart for the return of Jesus the Christ? As His covenant people, we need not be paralyzed by fear because bad things might happen. Instead, we can move forward with faith, courage, determination, and trust in God as we approach the challenges and opportunities ahead” [2017–A:104, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Perfect Love Casteth Out Fear]

Sister Michelle Craig Quote: “Jesus Christ sees people deeply. He sees individuals, their needs, and who they can become. Where others saw fishermen, sinners, or publicans, Jesus saw disciples; where others saw a man possessed by devils, Jesus looked past the outward distress, acknowledged the man, and healed him.” (2020–O:15, Michelle D. Craig, Eyes to See)

Elder Marlin K. Jensen Quote:  “Remembering enables us to see God’s hand in our past, just as prophecy and faith assure us of God’s hand in our future” (“Remember and Perish Not,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2007, 38).

Parley P. Pratt Quote: “Moses, being about to depart from his great responsibilities in the midst of Israel, laid his hands upon Joshua by the word of the Lord. After this Joshua was filled with the Spirit of God and of his calling. His works in leading Israel into the promised land, and there defending them and settling them according to the word of the Lord, go to show that he not only received a form under the hands of Moses, but he actually received the power and spirit of that form.”-JD 4:9, Parley P. Joseph Smith Quote: “There has been a great difficulty in getting anything into the heads of this generation. It has been like splitting hemlock knots with a corn-dodger [fried cornbread] for a wedge, and a pumpkin for a beetle [like a sledge]. Even the Saints are slow to understand. I have tried for a number of years to get the minds of the Saints prepared to receive the things of God; but we frequently see some of them, after suffering all they have for the work of God, will fly to pieces like glass as soon as anything comes that is contrary to their traditions: they cannot stand the fire at all.” (TPJS, p. 331)

Sister Bonnie Parkin Quote: “... the story of Caleb and Joshua, who, with 10 others, were sent to Canaan to report on its resources and people. Upon their return, the 10 reported all the negative things they saw, but Caleb and Joshua saw past those and spoke of the positive. Unfortunately, like today, the people chose to believe the doubters, and so only Caleb and Joshua were preserved to enter the promised land.” (Bonnie Parkin, An Anchor for Eternity—and Today, 1996.)

Elder Dallin H. Oaks Quote: “Moses prayed for relief, he was inspired to make “a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole.” Then, “if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived”  Such a small thing for such a miraculous result! That example and that teaching remind us that the simplicity of the way or the easiness of the commanded task cannot mean that it is unimportant to achieve our righteous desire.” (Small and Simple Things, Dallin H. Oaks, April 2018.)

Brigham Young Quote: “The Lord called upon Moses, and he stood amid the thunders and lightnings of Mount Sinai. Moses was a good and great man, but he had lived with and so often been aggravated by a wicked, murmuring, and rebellious people that he could not look upon God in his glory, [Ex. 33:17-23] but he could hear his voice and converse with his Heavenly Father in the pillar of cloud and fire. [Deut. 4:12]” [JD 9:308, Brigham Young, The Kingdom of God.]

Joseph Smith Quote: “Go to and finish the temple, and God will fill it with power, and you will then receive more knowledge concerning this priesthood.” -Joseph Smith [Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 323]

Seminary OT Teacher Manual: “Sacred religious clothing has been used symbolically since the Lord made “coats of skins” for Adam and Eve before they were cast out of the Garden of Eden (see Genesis 3:21). When Moses was on Mount Sinai for 40 days, the Lord revealed to him details concerning the tabernacle as well as the sacred clothing that was to be worn by the priests who would serve in the tabernacle.” (Seminary OT Teacher Manual, Lesson 53: Exodus 28–29; 31, also quoted in Real Talk Journal, pg 52)

Elder Nelson Quote: “Learn to listen, and listen to learn from neighbors.Opportunities to listen to those of diverse religious or political persuasion can promote tolerance and learning. With insights so important that the Savior Himself cited this holy book of scripture more than once during His ministry, Isaiah contains messages that are clearly vital to our understanding of the gospel. But with its notoriously complicated symbolism, how do we begin to decipher this sacred ancient text? The answer can be found in Learning to Love Isaiah, a practical guidebook from BYU Professor of Religion Kerry Muhlestein: we can deepen our comprehension by studying the scriptures chapter by chapter and verse by verse.

Featuring a range of gospel resources as support, each point of doctrine in each individual verse of Isaiah is contextualized with clarity, simplifying the symbolism behind even the most enigmatic verses. This guide also provides tools and training to assist you in gaining more understanding on your own. By discerning the meaning of both past and future fulfillment of prophecy, readers will find plentiful personal applications of the prophet’s words as they journey through the impactful holy book of Isaiah.

Institute Manual Quote: “It is unfortunate that many people, some even in the Church, think of the Mosaic law as a substitute for the higher law of the gospel. We call it a lesser law, and so it was, if the word lesser is used in the sense of progressive steps. But some people assume that lesser means of lower importance and significance, or of a lesser level of truth and righteousness.” (OT Institute Student Manual, Exodus 21–24; 31–35 The Mosaic Law: A Preparatory Gospel, as quoted in Real Talk Journal,  pg. 50)

John Taylor Quote: “We forget, sometimes, that we are the Saints of God; we forget that we have dedicated ourselves to the Lord, with all that we have; and we forget our high calling and our future destiny…. We condescend to little meannesses, … we falter and get into darkness, and lose the Spirit of the Lord. We forget that God and angels are looking upon us; … And, forgetting these things sometimes, we act the part of fools, … and we are then left to grope our way in the dark. But if we could live our religion, … observe [God’s] laws and his statutes, and keep his commandments to do them, we should feel very different; we should feel comfortable and happy; our spirits would be peaceful and buoyant; and from day to day, from week to week, and from year to year, our joys would increase.” (Journal of Discourses, 1858, “Blessings of the Saints,” 6:162)

Elder Perry Quote: “Aaron succumbed to the will of the people and told them to gather all their gold and silver and precious things and melt them into a form that made a golden calf, an idol that they could worship and carry with them as they journeyed. In the meantime, Moses was receiving the two tablets of testimony containing God’s commandments to His people. With the tablets in hand, Moses descended from the mountain.” L.Tom Perry- [2003–O:85, L. Tom Perry, We Believe All That God Has Revealed]

Elder Ezra Taft Benson Quote: “The record of the Nephite history just prior to the Savior’s visit reveals many parallels to our own day as we anticipate the Savior’s second coming” (Ezra Taft Benson, in Conference Report, Apr. 1987, 3; or Ensign, May 1987, 4).

Elder Maxwell Quote: “In a Kingdom where perfection is an eventual expectation, each other’s needs for improvement have a way of being noticed. Perceptive Jethro had plenty of data to back up the crisp counsel he gave his son-in-law Moses. Even prophets notice their weaknesses. Nephi persisted in a major task “notwithstanding my weakness.”  Another Nephite prophet, Jacob, wrote candidly of his “over anxiety” for those with whom he was not certain he could communicate adequately. Our present prophet has met those telling moments when he has felt as if he could not meet a challenge. Yet he did.” [1976–O:12, Neal A. Maxwell, Notwithstanding My Weakness]

David Bednar Quote, given while President of BYU Idaho: “It is one thing to obey the institutional, public, and shared commandments associated with the Lord’s kingdom on earth—commandments such as the law of chastity, the law of tithing, and the Word of Wisdom; it is an even greater thing to receive and respond to the individual, private, and personally revealed commandments that result from continual and faithful obedience.”  [Pres. Bednar, https://www2.byui.edu/Speeches/Bednar_Jan2004.htm#:~:text=It%20is%20one%20thing%20to,private%2C%20and%20personally%20revealed%20commandments]

Elder Nelson Quote: “Try as they might, no parliament or congress could ever repeal the law of earth’s gravity or amend the Ten Commandments. Those laws are constant. All laws of nature and of God are part of the everlasting gospel. … Even though one’s understanding of the truth may be fragmentary, truth itself does not change. Everlasting truth and wisdom come from the Lord. … From generation to generation, God has given additional light. Whether truth comes from a laboratory of science or directly by revelation, truth is embraced by the gospel.” (Elder Russell M. Nelson1993–O:33, Constancy Amid Change)

If we let Him, Jesus Christ will consecrate the unfairness for our gain. He will not just console us and restore what was lost; He will use the unfairness for our benefit. Real Talk & Friends - Tamara Hall
2928

Join this lively and wide-ranging discussion with acclaimed author and podcast host, Tamara Hall. Ganel-Lyn and John chat about:

  • The highs and lows of motherhood
  • Tammy’s new book “Far Above Rubies”
  • Tammy’s love of the Hebrew language and the insights it has added to her scripture study

    About Tamara Hall:

Tamara Hall is an acclaimed author, podcast host, and seminary teacher. She and and her husband are the parents to four girls and live in Utah. She is a host for Time Out for Women, a featured speaker at Temple Square Youth Conferences, Retreat for Girls, girls’ camp, and has been a speaker at BYU Women’s Conference. She loves all things scripture and is a lifelong student of the Hebrew language. A good flash mob makes her cry, she is a (self-proclaimed) champion Oreo eater, and she believes that cheese is God’s way of saying, “Hey, everything is going to be OK.”

    About Far Above Rubies:

Who can find a virtuous woman‭? ‬This is an age-old question that can both inspire and intimidate‭. ‬The saintly sister described in‭ ‬Proverbs 31‭ ‬is nothing short of astonishing‭: ‬an ideal wife and mother‭, ‬a valued contributor to society‭, ‬and a tireless proponent of all that is good and right‭. ‬In viewing these qualities as a goal‭, ‬women can often fall prey to this passage’s common outcome‭: ‬feelings of discouragement and inadequacy‭. ‬Many women are left to wonder‭, ‬Who could possibly embody such a perfect specimen of womanhood‭?‬

With Hebrew‭, ‬humor‭, ‬and reassurance‭, ‬author Tamara Uzelac Hall injects a much-needed dose of reality into women’s interpretation of this section of scripture with this truth‭: ‬all of us are virtuous‭. ‬This book teaches how to embrace the unique and impactful role you already play and will help you discover a truth that will change the way you view your life‭: ‬no matter‭ ‬your progress on the path‭, ‬thou art already a virtuous woman‭!‬

Pits, prisons, and prosperity are the themes of today’s episode as Ganel-Lyn and John discuss Joseph being sold into slavery and his subsequent trials and traumas. Joseph is a great example of moving forward in the midst of difficult situations and how staying true to God can give you the strength to turn heartache into healing.

Real Talk & Friends - John Hilton III (Easter Special)
2890

Have you ever wondered why, as Christians and members of the Church, we don’t often associate ourselves with the cross? Do you, personally, have an aversion to the cross, meaning you don’t wear jewelry with a cross or you feel uncomfortable if it’s used as decoration?

John Hilton III, professor of religion at BYU and recent author of Considering the Cross: How Calvary Connects Us with Christ, is here today with Ganel-Lyn and Scott to help answer these very questions.

After diving into the history of the cross after a friend asked him why we (in the Church) focus on Gethsemane so much in reference to the Atonement, John discovered that there is a misunderstanding in our culture of the symbol of the cross.

He delves into this misunderstanding, along with many other questions, in today’s interview and in his new book. Tune in right now if you want to know what he has to say! And check out @thelovingchrist on Instagram if you want to learn more of Christ and the cross.

Real Talk & Friends - T.C. Christensen
3084

T.C. Christensen, director of 17 Miracles, The Cokeville Miracle, The Fighting Preacher, and more, found his passion through making faith-promoting films that allow the audience to wrestle a little bit while also coming back to God.

He’s found guidance from Pete Seeger, a singer and songwriter who said the key to the future of the world is finding the greatest positive stories and letting them be told. Positive or negative stories shape people’s lives and attitudes, which ultimately shape the future of the world. That’s why T.C.’s goal is to help people feel uplifted.

His hero in filmmaking is Frank Capra, the creator of It’s a Wonderful Life. Frank loved to tell the stories of the little person—the person who’s an everyday schmo but is trapped in some situation and realizes if they’ll stick to their guns and do what’s right, they’ll make a difference.

On answering how he’s stayed the path of positive, uplifting filmmaking and not getting caught up in Hollywood gimmicks, T.C. said he decides what he will and won’t do way before any decision is presented. That way when he’s approached with an opportunity, there’s no decision to be made.

T.C. makes films with relatable protagonists—normal people that get put in an extraordinary circumstance and then they behave extraordinarily, maybe not for their whole life, but for that moment.

He has learned that the common thread in church history stories is to endure to the end. You’ve got to reach in your gut and keep going and trying. All of us at times feel like we don’t fit the mold. We’re not alone in feeling this way. Just keep going and endure to the end.

In 17 Miracles, the stories and miracles are true and they show that God is aware of us individually. God is out there and He’s watching out for us.

T.C. loves trying to bolster people with positive stories. He wants to give people things to hold on to that help them feel better as they get up in the morning and move on with life. His hope is that people will see these experiences, these evidences of God’s love and know this: I’m worth saving.

Real Talk & Friends - Brad Wilcox
3390

Have you ever wondered what grace really means or how it really can help you in your life?. Join us today for a phenomenal episode of Real Talk with our dear friend Brother Brad Wilcox, Second Counselor in the Young Men General Presidency, to talk about this and much, much more. Brother Wilcox is famous for giving the number-one most-viewed BYU devotional ever, “His Grace is Sufficient,” and he’s renowned for being a grace expert. He’s got some good news: grace is working. “It’s time to hear Him and not hear them,” he says in response to the noise of our commotional world. And to the youth, he has a special invitation to “step it up” instead of slacking off during the coronavirus pandemic: “COVID is not a vacation from your covenants.” Listen in, as Scott Sorensen & Ganel-Lyn Condie talk with Brother Brad, and share with us what stands out to you from Brother Wilcox’s message.
